FISH POO, what?...

As I browse through the RC thread, I notice many of us out there wondering what best to feed our corals. Most of the food that are used by many of us are common, and I personally use them for my fish tank. However, what I don't understand is FISH POO. many people talked about giving their corals fish poo. is this the actual fish waste that come out of their Anus? Why in the world corals need fish waste for growth? can someone shed a light on this topic for me? ANYONE?

thats what corals feed on, poop and urine..

thats what corals in the ocean feed on, nobody doses amino acids or coral snow into the ocean....

the coral is getting what ever protein is still left. and the urine and other nutrients are going to feeding the zooxanthellae

Do you know of another kind of poo? People have been fertilizing crops with poo for thousands of years. Thats just the circle of life, the water cycle, the food cycle, the nitrogen cycle, etc . . . Like GSMguy said, thats what corals actually eat in the ocean (or they eat microfauna that ate the poop).

Any academic article?
If you are saying nutrients from fish poop, why do we try to reduce the nutrients such as NO3 and PO4?
Even I do not have any fishes in my tank, my SPS have good coloration.

in the ocean the no3 and po4 are washed away... a 75gal is just a drop of water compared to the ocean... i have seen some articles about wild staghorns.. and the ones that had chromis and damsels liveing braches out grew the ones that did not

I understand what you are saying. Our tank is nothing compared to the ocean. If you can refer the article, it would be great.

Eat a bunch of spinach or other vegetables then look at your poo later in the day... herbivores tend to not digest very effectively which is why they typically have to eat LOTS of veggies. Now that's the great thing about eating herbivores is that more of that is digested.... mmmmmmm herbivores.

I remember reading an article by eric borneman on a dive trip.He said a huge shoal of tangs swam over the top of a huge brain coral releasing droppings and he observed the brain coral extending it's feeding tentacles and and feeding on the droppings.

sps are primarily carnivorous so a meaty food source such as rotifers would be better for them.

corals need N and P... not to be confused with N03 and P04, which are byproducts of having too much N and P in the water column (which then bind with O2 and become a "waste" product)... in a perfect world, we would be able to dump in an ounce or so if micro/macro foods per gallon, per day into the tank and we might get close to what nature provides in the way of food... in a closed environment though with sporadic (compared to nature) water changes, this is not possible... the best hope is to waaaaay oversize your skimmer, keep as much waste, etc. from settling and decomposing with a ton of flow, and do water changes as ofter as possible... all while keeping that delicate balance... nature didnt give corals thousands of mouths for nothing... they need to eat, and they do it often, if not continuously... i personally have an open brain coral that will accept 1/2 of a large table shrimp (26-30/lb) on a daily basis if i feed it that ;) i also feed micro foods daily in the form of a product called reef fuel and another called reef mist, plus a homemade blend (lots of goodies, big and small) and some other foods...

My guess would be that the poop itself isnt no3 or po4 based, but rather those are products of decomposition of the waster, like any other food not eaten in the system.

My fish poop a lot, I have no NO3 or PO4, and my corals have awesome color.

Fish gorge when they eat yet they break down the food into tiny particles, great for coral if you are feeding good food.

I use homemade food with great results.

Mammal poop can be used as ‚†ertilizer, but you cannot use it immediately. =)
Do SPS actively try to catch food in tank? I do not see/realize the action.

cannot use it immediately.........may be.
I used to pee right on the tomato that my mom grow in the back yard. My neighbours always told my mom those are the sweetest tomato ever..... I didn't tell tho..:D

Back in the day I know of an aquaculture facility that would use urine to feed large Tridacna clams as there was no available food/ammonia product to use for clam growth.

Literally just pee in the giant tanks
