Fish Popeye?

Are both eyes affected, does it appear cloudy? How is the water quality? Have you added any new fish to your system?

My black ocellaris had popeye in one of her eyes a couple months back, she had brushed it against a rock. With a good diet and proper water quality it lasted for a couple days and went away.

actually my problems began with my ick problem the situation is that i recently started a QT tank to treat my fish using hypo. but now the tang and the one clown fish has there right eyes swelled up some one said it could be popeye but not postitive. for water i used the water from my display tank. water is alright. but anyways i am not sure really what it is.

O.k Thanks it looks more like cloudy eye, but with doing hypo we are giving the fish all the extra nutrition that we have possible and if it comes from water changes how are you supposed do hypo when this mainly consists of water changes? Should we wait till this gets better before changing the water again, or should we just continue to treat the ick with water changes? I guess your damned if you do, damned if you don't?

Treat with melafix and pimafix. Normally due to high nitrates and stress.

Since when did high nitrates cause popeye in Saltwater fish? Can you provide an academic reference to back that up Bluecarpet?

Melafix is snake-oil for saltwater newbies IMO.

Assuming no problems with water quality, a Tang and a clown with the same condition suggests it's probably something bacterial (odds are remote they both scraped their eye at the same time).

Good food, a good environment and broad-spectrum antibiotics like Erythromycin are probably the best bet.

I see no reason to use hyposalinity unless you suspect ich or velvet.

Are the fish eating ok?

So nitrates are good? Nitrates can cause a fish to become stressed and therefor result in popeye. Melafix and Pimafix work miracles and are not for newbies but in fact experienced fish keepers. I know a koi doctor who would love to talk to you about this just pm me and i will give you his name and number. He is an expert not me. I go by what he says. I like to help people on this board not harass them.

Lordy.

I said: "Melafix is snake-oil for saltwater newbies IMO."

Notice that word 'saltwater'? You do know Koi are freshwater fish right?

>>So nitrates are good?

Nobody said nitrates were good.

So, how do Nitrates cause popeye exactly? Let's have those citations!

No offence there Sparky, but anyone who thinks a 12 gallon Nanocube with 48w of PC lighting is a suitable environment for a carpet anemone, should not be giving advice to anyone.

We are treating the fish for ick, so maybe the stress of moving them to a smaller tank could have caused this? They have been eating fine ( I'm supprised , because the tangs eye is about triple the size it should be). It is only one eye on each fish, the clown seems to be trying to lay sideways on the botton of the tank ( ? I don't know why, I was thinking because of his reflection )but it's toward the swollen eye)

My carpet seems to be doing very well. It is obviously not his permanent home. Dont jump to conclusions. I know for a fact that my friend who is the koi doctor also knows saltwater fish very well and is an expert in both freshwater and saltwater fish. You do realize that there are koi that are thousands of dollars and people have doctors for them unlike saltwater which is very inexpensive when it comes to prize koi. So please pm me if you would really like to talk to him. And please dont tell me whether or not i should give advice for i know i have the right to help people on this board other than harass them like you have done to me.

I think someone needs to take a deep breath, and maybe step away from the computer for a few hours.
Juck, your advice is good, and much appreciated. Your delivery in this case, leaves room for improvement.
