So last night I sat with my new baby boy and we watched the Wrasses for about a half hour. It seems that last night was a wrasse orgy. There was a lot of displaying and flashing going on. I was sucked in and couldn't look away. The part that was most interesting is that it wasn't variety specific, I watched the Male Johnsoni displaying and courting the female only to have the Pintail force the spawn. The Marjorie once female now male spawned with the Johnsoni and the Lunatus, the Balteatus pair spawned a couple times as well. It was non stop action. The poor male Johnsoni spent a lot of time trying to impress his female but once she was close one of the other wrasses would steal her away and spawn, but he kept trying. They would race to the surface and then everyone would hit the water column eating the eggs. You could see the other fish kind of just hanging out near the surface around the outside edge waiting for each event and then it was feeding time. Then the activity just died down, like they know that the lights are getting ready to shut off and the start heading down closer to the rock work. What a great half hour spent bonding with my 3 week old.
