Fish prices! Yikes!

Has anybody noticed the prices of fishes these days... I guess I havent bought a fish in a while, but it seems like they have gone up 100 % since last time I got one...

Even frags from stores are now 20-30... wild frags... Iused to get this stuff for 8-10 bucks...

I wonder if the hobby is suffering from a case of greed. I think price increase in some things are a given and understandable.

Your shopping the wrong stores I think, sounds like Tongs prices to me.

The problem was the fish that I wanted were not at the cheaper stores.... I am just amazed that they get these prices for these fish.

i've been in this hobby too long. i remember purple tangs for $250 when red sea fishes were first introduced.

While I was buying my 33 cube from Petco I saw a lunar wrasse for $15, I couldnt resist. Its now a very healthy resident of my tank. The next week I went in there and saw a exquisite wrasse for $30.... I wish I had held out for that one. Not bad prices imo.

it's also because of the summer seasons, because of the heat it is more difficult to get things in alive and such, tends to happen about every summer from what i see, things going up 10 bucks or more. But I also agree with nicolec with the cost of fuel and everything else.

I recently picked up an arabian pseudo wrasse for $15 at a Petco... the same one Tong's sells for $60

I don't think I have ever been to a Petco I would trust enough to care for marine critters. Then again, I have never been to a Petco that stocks marine critters.

weather its Petco or Tongs... in order to ensure the survival of any fish being introduced into a system... QT is the proper answer (hardly do i listen to my own advice )

The one on Newport Blvd in Costa Mesa. The type of fish they stock changes daily so you actually go and see what they have.

Nicole is right the biggest jump in price came when gas prices got over 2.50-3.00 per gallon. But I also think demand and greed are playing a role. Coral prices have become rediculous. Five years ago you could routinely get 1"-3" acro frags for $5-15 and colonies for $25-60. LPS averaged $24-40.
Now most people want $20 plus for 1/2" -1" frags, $70- 200 for a small colony and LPS average $40-100. I will never get out of this hobby, but man I miss the prices from the years past. It's hard to do the poor man reef. The only good I see possibly coming out of this trend is that more people are becoming educated by the hobby and hopefully There is a large enough base of reefers to reduce the impact on wild collection.

Make friends with guys who have big reef tanks... we can be generous at times

My 5 yr old blue tang died the other day... My reef has really grown out of control a bit, so the swimming space has shrunken, and the fish got bigger... so, whether old age... or causes unknown he died..

I bought one the size of a dime, and he has already disappeared... I should have known better... probly stuck in my overflow
