Fish Room build. Ocean/Beach Theme. Lots of Questions

Hi Guys,

Im in the process of creating a really cool room. It will be an ocean/beach theme with a 4'x4'x16" reef tank as the centerpiece and will also feature a "bar" stand. Basically the stand extends an additional foot on each side and I will be adding bar stools.

Several questions while setting up this room.

1. I'm looking at replacing the current ceiling light/fan fixture and adding outlets to run radions from a drop down. Is this a good idea? Has anyone done this. I will be blanking off the light switch. I'm also trying to figure out a way to hang the radions that is minimal an attractive if theres people who have good ideas.

2. Looking to put some kind of laminate on the stand Bar portion. ideas on pattern/color?

3. Colors/patterns to make panels/cabinets for the sides of the tank stand? Again think beach/ocean theme

4. Any other cool suggestions?

It helps to have a little background on what you like. Things that you would like to see in a themed room, etc. Ive been covering my walls in joint compound and then painting them like corals, octopus, fish to help add to the theme. Lighting styles, nautical stuff, wall techniques; it all adds up in the space. Make the room look like it was always a fish room. That the house was built around it essentially and have fun with it! My basement is my steampunk escape

I notice two things in you picture which you will want to think about.

First is the window. If the blinds will be left open during the day you may want to figure out how much sun light will hit the tank. Sun light can cause problems with algae and cyano.

Second is the air vent above the tank. I'd direct the cool/hot air away from the top of the tank as this can cause temp swings.

As for suggestions, my wife insisted our tank room have lots of beach/nautical feel. So we used anchors, light and dark blues, boat cleats, etc. The design will have to be personal. Check Pinterest.

Great idea.

My input would have to do with tank maintenance. From what I see is you should do one of two things. Either be prepared to climb up and above the table. Or you can cut a "bar style" door into it in order to get closer access.

For comfortable seating you need 12" of space under the counter for "leg room".

Love the octopus in your pic Krazy. Reefy, after you finish the finish of the bar top, I would put a mat or foam insulation under the tank for leveling and even pressure. And maybe some kind of "surround" on the bottom of tank to keep it from chipping or getting scratches. On another note... if you left the ceiling fan, you wound never need a chiller, you could probably evaporate 4 gallons a day with that fan location [emoji12]
