Fish sales

Hey thanks guys. I went to Wet Pets, that place is sweet. I purchased 2 True Percula`s. The only negative is that they were acting really funny and I took water down to get it tested and as it turns out since I tried to save money and bout a deep six to check salinity as opposed to just getting a refractometer my salinity is 1.028 as opposed to the 1.023 that it was reading. I took out 4g of water last night and replaced it with 4 g of RO/DI and within minutes they percked up a decent amount( salinity now 1.026ppm). I have water ready to go and when I get home from work I will be replacing another 4g. Once again the moral of the story is DONT GO CHEAP!!

I run my salt at 1.028 all the time with no negative effects to my clowns. NSW runs about 1.026 anyway, it's just a higher risk for ich, so that's why people run it lower.

Wet Pets says they keep there tanks at 1.022 and thats why I was having the problem due to mine being so high and the fish not being used to it. What are you`r thoughts on that?

I run mine at 1.026 and buy fish from there all the time, never had any issues, however I drip acclimate my fish for 3-5 hours before putting them in my tank.

How did you acclimate them?

Therea are other variables as well such as PH, alk, nitrate etc that could be different from their tanks to yours.

They told me roll up the bag, hang it in the tank, put a half cup of tank water in every 10 minutes for 45 minutes so I did do it that way. Maybe I should switch to the drip method?? My Nitrates are 40ppm I believe there`s are 0ppm. They checked my Phosphates are ok. From what I know 40ppm Nitrates shouldnt harm fish should it?

I only temperature acclimate. A healthy fish is very resiliant to small changes in salinity or nitrates...especially a shipped fish I will put in immediately due to the buildup of toxic nitrates and the progressive lowering of pH in the bad. Research has shown that the CO2 from fish respiration lowers the pH, and that simply opening the bag causes a pH spike of up to .5. The analogy is a human being going from a garage full of Carbon Monoxide experiencing shock by opening the door and walking outside. You wouldn't experience shock so much as relief. Store bought fish are different, but I prefer to get them in the tank water as soon as the temperature's are equalized, and don't experience losses this way. Drip acclimation would be my second choice.

+1 I only temp acclimate fish.

I always drip to acclimate my new fish.

As for Atlantis, avoid that place like the plague.

You can buy the same size and species three times in one month and pay three different prices. Gary knows nothing about business ethics, or customer service.

AND... his saltwater fish system is usually running around 1.016 at best. Those poor fish are sure to get shocked in any aquarium that is kept correctly. I deal only with Wet Pets now.

I did deal with Wet Pets, on several occasions now (once for fish so far) and I have to say I am very glad that I went there. Great service and product/livestock!! Thanks guys.

This procedure actually isn't as dangerous to fish as it seems, and keeping fish in lower salinity levels actually is much better for them as far as ich is concerned. Ich thrives in hyper-saline solutions, not so much in the lower salinity scale. I'd run a fish only system around 1.017-1.019.
