Hey RC,

I am looking to add some small lively fish to my display. I was thinking of a bunch of chromis. What suggestions do you guys have?

Thanks,

R.W.

I wouldn't go with Chromis, they are very likely to kill each other until only one left. How small were you looking? How about Anthias?

i was looking for a bunch of small active fish to mix in with my larger ones, anthias were a thought originally as well. I was looking for fish <3inches

Im thinking about the same thing and i have one single chromis and its doing great! I think anthias would be great but they recommend feedings like 3 times a day I believe.

you could try doing chalk basslets, they tend to stick together in groups and never grow past 3 inches, or for anthias you could try silver streak they are relatively inexpensive and small but over time will defiantly be worth the investment

For anthias I'd go with Ignitus, Bartletts, or lyretails. The latter two are some of the easier anthias to keep, also outgoing and very pretty.

If you can track down the females, a large group of flasher wrasses could be good too. They're to most active fish in my tank!

Chalk basslets are an interesting choice, does anyone have any info on keep groups of these fish together? Are they active in the water column?

I have owned dispar anthias which were nice, I'm considering trying another fish this time around. Feeding isn't an issue, my tank is fed 10-15 times a day.

What do you guys think of cardinal fish?

Thanks,

R.W.

I tried 3 chalk bass in my tank, they never fought but they didn't stay together and they aren't active. They just stay close to their hole and hang out

I really like chalk basslets. When I have kept groups, they don't really 'school', but mine were always quite active in the water column.

Chromis aren't likely to kill each other, that kind of behavior isn't like them at all, they're very peaceful and would be a great addition

Au contraire, Chromis, particularly Green Chromis, are notorious for picking each other off. Every time I tried to keep a group I ended up with either a single individual or, if lucky, a pair.

Below is a link that has some Chromis success stories and failures. I was of the impression, and experience, that how ever many you start with, you will end up with one. After reading some experiences by other hobbyist that counter that notion, I plan on giving it another go one day, but not until I have the right mix of fish to go along side them (to keep them in check).

Hope this helps

I wouldn't do Bangais from what I've read they pair. Any other of your preference would be pretty cool though. I'm not sure if they will "school" in the open water like chromis do though.

Chromis do pick each other off, I have had them in my tank before and they slowly dwindled their numbers to 1. I was thinking more along the lines of striped-cardinal fish. Thanks for the input about the chalk bass, I think I will stay away from them. Has anyone ever tried a group of damsels?
