Fish that are blue?

I had this same dilemma. I returned a Yellowtail Damsel bc of aggression and really wanted to replace the blue color. Refused to try another damsel with nothing but peaceful fish in the tank. I considered blue reef chromis and blue gudgeon dartfish, but they can both get kinda big. So I just ended up getting a little neon goby. Is he the most vivid blue color? No. But he's blue. And he adds a funny little dynamic trying to ride all the small fish that don't like being cleaned.

I also had two of the blue devils and the only thing they ever had a problem with was fighting with eachouther. Even then they were fat, healthy and never bothered any other fish except everything else was bigger than them

Krylon will make any fish blue. That is one nice looking Chromis Nick posted. I'd go with a pair of the blue Gudgeons.

how about these?

... I know you said no damsels, but the one's I listed are all fairly benign and sociable in your average community tank. The oceans full of blue fish, so just keep an eye out and do the research :) Good luck with whatever fish you end up choosing

This. I have two and love them to death.

I have the ORA electric Indigo dottyback. It is blue and black. Great fish. No aggression towards a lubbocks fairy wrasse, tail spot blenny, mandarin, watchman goby, or clown. I too have a 40 breeder.

It may only be a little bit of blue, but I REALLY love my Pictus (White-lined Combtooth) Blenny.
They're not seen very often, but they're an amazing fish!

Watanabai angel. Although this photo make them look less blue in person they are blue.

Hi all,

I know the title seems like a piece of cake, but under certain parameters I've come up pretty empty handed. I'm looking for a vivid blue fish for my 40g reef tank. Here are a few that I've ruled out for different reasons, blue reef chromis, damsels of any sort, tangs (powder & regal). Although I was tempted to get one of the tiny regals at the LFS, but my better senses prevailed. So what would some of your suggestions be? I've thought about a few of the dwarf angels, but I'm pretty set on getting a flame angel sooner or later down the line so that rules them out too! I know they're a gamble on being reef safe or not, so in case any of you were wondering I'm definitely willing to take that gamble if that broadens the suggestions.

I wonder if it would be handy to have a data base that has fish separated by main color they display to make it easy for people like me going after a specific color... has anyone heard of anything like that?

Thanks for all of your suggestions!

ok, ill list a few:

green chromis
blue chromis
neon goby
cherub angelfish
flameback angelfish
various damsels
scissortail dartfish
some types of blennies
dottybacks
