fish through egg crate?

Didn't think it was possible, but it happened sometime last night. I woke up to find my longnose hawkfish carpet surfing. Somehow he fit through the gridded egg crate. Thought the grids were small enough but wrong. This is my second jumper (clown) in a little over a week. I haven't added anything to the tank in months, the longnose was a replacement for the clown so they were both solitary fish. Any ideas or suggestions?

When I have fish that can make it through the eggcrate I cable tie plastic gutter guard onto the eggcrate to reduce hole size.

You might, if all else fails, set up an open-top tank canopy that has a 9 inch tall facing on all sides, and perch your light-kit on it. Very few potential surfers can jump high enough to clear that.

My canopy has an open back so I enclosed it with eggcrate and covered the eggcrate with nylon window screen which I glued to the eggcrate with PVC glue. This will keep everything in the tank and so far I have plenty of air circulation and minimal heat buildup which was my only concern. So far, so good.

I wonder if it would work if you took the eggcrate and ran fishing line diagonally across the squares. Tieing it every few squares. I would take some time to do, but might help and would block hardly any light. :p
