Fishies not Football

I'm not sure how accurate the numbers in that article are, but it does make for a compelling argument. It would be nice if enough businesses/attractions would open to turn around the Downtown area from being considered a Mon-Fri 8-5 area.

St. Louis has some great museums, but I don't think any of them are considered world class, with the exception maybe of the Zoo. That part of downtown is just a dump, so anything we do to it will be an improvement.

If I lived in the county or in the city of STL, I'd be calling my political reps daily to protest spending that kind of tax payer dollars on another sports arena. But them I'm not a football fan, so I could really give a rip about keeping our current team or getting another one here. Why does the city need to spend that kind of money for us to watch 8 football games?

Now, I am a big soccer fan, so I wouldn't be opposed to a stadium built for an MLS expansion team. It's not as many games as a baseball or hockey season, but it's still more than double what an NFL team plays at home. Not to mention that there are teams from other countries and leagues that could/would play here. I went to the Chelsea/Manchester City game a couple years ago at Busch Stadium. It sold out in about 15 minutes. I think there's an appetite for professional soccer in STL.

The last I heard about the new football stadium was a proposal to spend upwards of $900 million. The proposal for the Jacksonville aquarium was $85 mil plus $15 mil for startup and inhabitants. Seems to me that an aquarium would be a more useful use of that kind of money. Hmmm...spent 1/10 of the money for a stadium on something else that attracts people and revenue to the city? Sounds like a better strategy to me.

With the attendance numbers they have, it seems that there isn't as much support for the Rams here as other cities have for their team. It just doesn't make sense to spend nearly a billion dollars of tax payers money to build a stadium that will be used 8 times a year to keep a team that does not have the general support of the region. A team that doesn't seem to want to stay as they've made their desire to move to LA pretty obvious.

It's wrong as well that the city went to court to get a ruling so they don't need to hold a public vote to approve the deal. It's just not right to spend that much public money without even giving us the option to vote on it as Missouri Law allows.

For $100,000,000 to $300,000,000 they could get a world class aquarium that would draw in people 365 days a year and actually provide real economic benefit to the region.

For any Rams fans out there, I do apologize. I'm not really meaning to be so negative about the team. It just really bothered me that the city went to court to get permission to spend this money while bypassing the law that would normally require a vote first.

You guys should check out John Oliver's take on Stadiums. They really are a huge racket! Just google "john oliver stadiums" and watch the video.

I'd donate to the cause if we could get a world class aquarium moving forward.
