Fixing my noisy MP10

Anyone who has or has had an mp10 for more than a year knows that the bearings will fail and get loud as can be. There's a thread on here that shows how to replace the bearings on the MP40 and I'm assuming it's the same for the MP10. I have an old dry side laying around from when I replaced it and started messing with it out of boredom, I managed to easily pop off the cover (results not typical) which made me decide to look up how to replace the bearings. So I found out you need to use two 687zz bearings size 7x14x5mm. I just ordered mine from here.http://www.acerracing.com/ball_bearings/7X14MM_Ceramic_Ball_Bearing-608-30.html

This is where I'm at so far as I just looked into it for the past 5 minutes. From what I read these bearings are damn near silent and you don't get the loud whirring sound anymore. FYI use bearings with atleast an ABEC rating of 5 or more, the higher the better.

For anyone interested in doing this I hear the hardest part is getting the cover off the MP10 as it has some kind of glue on it, I guess mine didn't have any as I tried pulling off the rubber pad on the front (before I looked up how to take it apart) and the whole cover just popped off. After that remove the allen bolts and pop the motor in the freezer and the bearings should come off fairly easy (again from what I've read). Turns out I don't have a small enough allen wrench so till the morning I'm stuck at the getting the covers off part.

Pictures to make this easier.
What I'm to to referring to as the "front"

The "back"

I'll continue this tomorrow when I find an allen wrench.

So the allen screw on the front part is tricky to get out, turns out it's permanently attached to the metal disc. I was trying to keep the disc from turning and ended up stripping the allen a little bit.

On the back there's a slot, you turn that with a scewdriver and hold the front screw in place.

Here's that slot with the case still on.

And with it all apart.

And this is the part you throw in the freezer. the two bearings you are replacing are on either side of the magnet. Keep in mind this magnet is really powerful so keep away from any electronics.

The vortech with the motor pulled out.

This little washer goes into the bottom of the above picture.

That's it until the new bearings get here.

thats funny I was just reading how to do this not even 5 min ago. Let me know how it turns out and maybe when you replace them let me know and I can come over and watch/learn if you dont mind.

I'll post a video of me trying to take the bearings off, I haven't figured out how I'm going to put them back on yet though.

After doing some more research I realized there's 3 bearing stacked on top of each other, I found one on the floor but have no idea where the other one went. I'm gonna head to hobbytown usa tomorrow in hopes to find another washer. They just fall out, so pay attention when you pull the motor out of the casing.

Word of caution....that black magnet will chip extremely easy. I would not try to pry the bearings off in any way.

This is just a spare for me, but I'm gonna try the holding the bearing and tapping the center shaft out method. It's hard to explain but I'll post pictures possibly a video tomorrow.

put bearing in vice and then use a punch to push down on the shaft. do not hit the shaft with a hammer read doing this can damage it..

OK. Got the bearings off, one was easy and one was a pain in the butt. On one side I was able to do the vise trick well I held the bearing with pliers and tapped on the shaft with a punch and it popped out. The other side (back side) had a small gap between the magnet and the bearing, this one would not come out for nothing I couldn't get a good enough grip with the pliers and the whole thing would fly out when I tapped it. I got a little careless with it and tried prying it out with a screwdriver but that didn't work either. Finally I grabbed my wire cutters, slid them under the bearing and squeezed like hell, this finally popped the bearing off.

I didn't get pictures during because I ended up getting frusturated:hammer:.

But here's how I got the difficult one off, when the bearing is there the wire cutters don't reach the shaft and with the shape of the cutters the pressure forces the bearing upwards.

The end result

I managed to mangle up the edges of the magnet but again this is a spare just to see if it works. Now I know what to do when my other two go out.

Got the bearings in. They went in a 1000 times easier, more or less worked them on with my fingers.

And it works, I wish I would have gotten a video of how loud it was before hand, it literally kept me from sleeping (the reason I replaced it in the first place). It was just a terribly loud growling noise.

Here's a video with a factory mp10 for comparison. At most it is SLIGHTLY louder than the factory but this is taken within a minute of it running I'm sure when it breaks in it will be quieter.

Here's a link to the youtube vid.

Yup, I went from 100% to the lowest setting back to 100% then back to the lowest setting turned on the factory mp10 at 100% and again the "modded" mp10 to 100%.

Tomorrow I'll put both mp10's on one side of the tank and compare, I'm getting the itch to replace all the bearings now as I'm realizing how loud the factory one is compared to the modded one.

Hmm. On the lookout for loud mp10's possibly mp40's now. I might run 4 mp10's on this tank or a couple of mp40's if I find them cheap. There were a few floating around for $50.

let me know if you get any extra. i would love to get an mp10. are you looking on cl or the for sale forums on here? a little bit of work to save a couple hundred bucks? thats a no brainer

Really wow cheapest I have seen an 10 is more then double that. Under 100 would be a steal
