In an effort to try to save money on my tank upgrade .... I'm wondering if this idea might work.....
On my current 180 gallon I have an Outer Orbit 3 x 150w hqi/4 pc fixture. I know they aren't 'high end' but it has done very well for me. I have thriving sps, lps, clams and anemones .... no complaints on the light at all. On my 90 I have an ATI sunpower - again, no complaints after I got over the initial light shock on the poor tank when I upgraded to that light. I do, however, really miss the shimmer from the halides.
So, I am upgrading the 180 to a 300 gallon dd and am trying to decide on lighting. I would like to avoid the diy route just for convenience and the fact that it is not one of my skills! I was initially going to go with a 10 bulb powermodule but I'm just afraid that i will miss the shimmer of the halides too much and can't quite give that up.
Finding a mh/t5 combination fixture to cover the 36" width of the new tank, however, has proven tough. Giesemann and Sfiligoi stealth are the two choices that I think would work great but I just haven't been able to talk myself into pulling the trigger on those price tags!
So, an idea was to use my current outer orbit and add a 6 bulb sunpower behind it ...... the 'gypsy rig' can be hidden by a canopy.
Any comments (try to tell me I'm crazy nicely if thats your thought :lolspin
or suggestions would be welcomed.
