flame and flameback together?

Will these two be ok in my 60G cube if I introduce them together?

There's plenty of LR for them to swim around in.

I like a bigger tank for the flame - I would not put those 2 in together - they both have "aggressive" personalities -

I use to have a flame and a coral beauty in a tank and they go along well, guess the flameback is a bit more peculiar than the coral beauty.

I have a cherub, small flame, large flame, coral beauty (plus a heraldi & a Singapore together...
The flames & the cherub don't get along very well - the lg. flame keeps the cherub assigned to the left half of the tank & the cherub takes out his frustrations by occasionally chasing the sm. flame especially during spawning
I would not want these fish together in a smaller tank & will be glad when I have an extra 100g

I tried them both in a 45 gallon. "I know" (not the smartest move)...... they were both a gift this past christmas. I couldn't choose which to keep but I decided to keep them both. A couple days later it was war and I wouldn't have thought that the 1/2" smaller african flameback had the larger flame beat. Before my friend could take the flame angel to his home he could only use 1 eye. Sad but true....the good thing is the flame has been doing great in my friends tank for the last month or 2. Only problem is the flame angel is stuck on making right turns for the rest of his life.

I have a question for you Angel*Fish...I was thinking of trying to get a pair of flame angels like you in my 55G reef. I am looking for something to replace my aggressive yellow tang and want something different. Do you think if I get a nice small one(under 1") and added a larger one a week or so later Id be fine or is 55G too small for a pair of flames...thanks!

If they are small flames & you're going to upgrade, it would be fine for a while I'd think - but IMOyou really must be committed to the upgrade

Since you don't have a flame, you have some options as to how to pair them before adding them to your main tank. If I were doing it i would not allow the smaller fish to sit for a week thinking about how how wonderful it would be to turn male . That may be overkill for a juvenile fish, but still I'd add it directly into a tank with a "full blown" male. Since you don't already have one in your main tank this could even be done at the LFS. Please post or pm to let me know how it turns out :)

my LFS got in a huge order today so I am going to go in a bit tosee what all he got...he said he ordered 8 flames...lets just hope a small one came in! I have been following your threads for a while so hopefully I make the right decisions...

I do plan on upgrading this summer(june) currently my tank is 55g with 100 pounds of live rock...10sump...10 refugium...prolly gonna go up to a 90 or 110. Thankds for your help...sorry to hijack the thread!

Well I did it and got two flames today. One MUCH BIGGER than the other.

But while acclimating the bigger one was pushing the small guy around.

What to do, what to do.

How big is the small one? Might be a male, I would still give it time though.

I read on a post here that you can tell the diff between male and female by the blue on the end of their fins. More blue is a male and I think (NOT POSITIVE on this second one) the male has the stripes on the blue section. Also the thickness of the black bars, males have thicker bars (but you probably won't notice this till they mature). Maybe Angel*fish can find some truth to this, since she owns a pair.

You can expect a certain amount of aggression as the male asserts his dominance - but actual fin nipping or one having to cower constantly in a corner is a sign of 2 males
