Flame angel eating problems?

An LFS employee told me that Flame Angels can be hard to keep because they do not eat well in captivity. But, I see that many folks here have one or several, so I am thinking that they can't be that hard to keep....

Does anyone know about eating problems with Flames?

Also, I know that Angels need special food that contains sponge and the like. What would I need to feed a Flame, and does this feeding criteria apply to all angels, large and dwarf?

Thanks for any input

A healthy, well collected/acclimated specimen should eat fairly soon after introduction to a tank. Live rock offers a grazing ground and most centropyges get a good deal of nourishment from algal film/diatoms they get off of LR. Offer it nori on a clip, mysis shrimp, plankton, pellets, things like Marine Cuisine and Emerald Entree, minced clam and mussel. Sponge is not a staple for many dwarf angels but they usually eat it. I've kept numerous dwarf angels and some larger pomacanthus and all eat pretty much the same foods. Variety is key so be sure to mix up the diet to include several foods.

Jerry is right. If it's well collected and treated it should eat fairly quickly. Mysis and cyclopeze usually work very well to get new fish eating in very short order. Once they get comfy and eating, you can start offering more variety. Flames are not any more tricky than most other Centropyge angels. The big trick is really how they were collected ;)

Thanks everybody, great avatar Grouperhead I miss Jerry too

Me too :( . Listening to 3/26/73 (Boston) right now and Jerry just lit up the solo on Brown Eyed Woman :bum:

Jerry got all the various food covered. I would say from the start feed them different thing each time till you see which one they like and feed that for a couple of days. Soak them with vitamin and galic to entice them. Once they learned to eat in your tank then you can try pellets, freeze dried food and other frozen food. I've six and only two of them come out to eat nori. They spent most of the day grazing rocks and glass. Looks like both of your tanks are up more than a year so I don't think you will have any problem. Good luck with yours!

btw--I feed the same stuff for all the angels, butterflies and the rest.
