Flame angel in a 20gal???

Since I cant search on RC about this subject. I just want to ask if this is recommended. Thanks

I dont think you will find anybody that would reccommend that. I think the minium for any dwarf angel is a 55g or larger.

Even the smallest dwarf species like a fair bit of space, and I wouldn't do one of the larger species (flame, CB, Potter's, halfblack, lemonpeel etc.) in anything less than 50g, preferably more. I keep a C. flavicauda, one of the 'dwarf dwarf' Centropyge angels, in my 30g and even that's pushing it IMO. I have a coral beauty, a flame and a cherub in my 65g and they use every single inch. I can't imagine a flame being too happy in a 20g, but it's possible people have done it with success.

Not a good idea. Angels like to swim a lot; I agree with at least 55 gallons.

I speak angelfish and they said that they hope that it doesn't float your boat to confine them to a tank of that size. FWIW my LFS has a 40,000g tank with a flame that uses the entire tank. He says that he is one happy little fish.

I was reading Scott Micheal's book "Reef Fishes" (the pocket book version) today and for the min tank size he put down for the flame angel is 20 gal. and Dr. Foster and Smith has it down for 30 gal. Im not saying Im going to get one. Im just wondering how you guys, book author's and other websites determine the recommend size of tank for a fish. Especiallly the smaller size fishes. Im not trying to stir up a big RC debate thread (we have enough of those..haha) Im just curious thats all

Dwarf Angels are a gamble in ANY size tank. I had one for years that left my corals alone then when he died years later I bought another Flame to replace him and he nipped every coral I had. Had to get rid of him or lose my corals. Any fish is a coin flip!

FWIW, Scott Michael recently updated that to 30g. Personally I think 55g is minimum & if the fish lives long enough to get large, he needs an upgraded tank.

Keep in mind that you will have to be comfortable with the behavior you see in the fish. What looks like a stressed to fish to one person may look fine to a different person. Are some people better at recognizing a stressed fish than others? Of course -- do some over anthropomorphize? Of course!
