Flame Angel Making Me Nervous

I bought a flame angel on Thursday evening. It looked really healthy to me and used the little fishes room at the store, so I knew it had recently eaten. After bringing it home and acclimating it, it hid most of the night, but occasionally came out. Yesterday it never fully came out of hiding, but it did peek out of the rocks a few times.

In 7 years of reef keeping I have never had a fish that hid this much that didn't die. Are new flame angels known to hide? I've had other dwarf angels in the past that would be out in a couple hours, but I've never kept a flame before.

Yes. They can be a little shy at first. You may be begging for it to act that way in a few months. They can become very territorial. I had one that became a little terror. He's since bounced around a few tanks and caused trouble in a 300, 180, and now a 120.

He's in quarantine now. I have a 24 gallon nano I use as one. Since the tank is in my living room I keep some LR and soft coral in it. The tank has been fishless for over a year, so the pod population is great.

That's my favorite fish. They're very shy for a few weeks and if you have other angels it might take longer. I've had 3 and unfortunately all three have loved to pick at my corals after months of model behaviour. Good luck!

When I first introduced mine to the 150 display tank I saw it maybe twice the first week. in my experience they take a little longer to get acclimated to a tank than some others, but once settled they come out and are plenty active

when i first got mine, it didnt eat the first 2-3 weeks except picking on rocks. after that, it ate like a pig.

If it is the only fish, it may be "scared"

I have had fish the were by them selves & hid all the time. Add a few other fish and they are out and about all the time.

He is still hiding like yesterday, but I put some dry food in the back where he hides and I'm pretty sure he ate some.

Thought I'd give an update. He is still hiding most of the day, but occasionally venturing out. He's eating as long as I drop the food right where he is hiding. Also his right eye has a white film over it, so I am assuming it's an abrasion due to hiding in the rocks.

I wouldn't assume that... double check parameters and consider prophylactic treatment if it gets any worse and keep him feeding on high quality foods. Reef fish dart in and out of rocks all day, although possible he nicked himself, not probable.

I would try shooting a little brine or mysis out front, see if that draws him out. Sometimes a fish needs a little encouragement, to convince him to hang out where you want him to hang out. :fish1: Knowing that spot is where the food magically appears can help.
