Flame Angel??

I have a 100 gallon tank.. It's 5ft long and really want a FA.. I've read and have been told they nip at corals.. I don't have many corals in my tank at the moment but don't want to jeopardize future corals.. I see a lot of reef tanks with them.. Anyone here have them in their tank?? Any help and info would be great.. Thanks..

From what I understand C. aurantonotus is prone to nip at stony corals. C. acanthops looks very similar to the flame back, but might not be as prone to nip stonies. The risk is still there. C. resplendens may be even less like than the other two to hit corals and still retains a very similar look.

Either way, there is no such thing as a 100% RS angel. Some people get lucky with a fish that ignores their corals but if you are serious about having sessile inverts then I would forego the angels.

Thanks for the info.. Greatly appreciated:beer:

Of the three Flame angels I have two are safe with anything, one picks on corals every now and them but does not kill them.

I have had four flame angels in my reefing career. Three (including the current one) have been model citizens, the fourth was a bit of a nipper, but not terrible (had a LemonPeel once, ONCE, that was a terror). No angel is completely reef safe, but the flame is a good bet IMO. My feeling, not scientifically validated, is that a more boisterous fish population helps to focus my flames on other things, and not nipping at corals.

I hv kept two flame angels in my 10 year reef career. Both angels were and still are very model citizens. They r in reef with clams, sps, lps and softies. No issue whatsoever.

I got my flame angel last year, October. So far, he's been a model citizen, hardly ever bothering the corals. Not scientific data but from many angel owners, it seems your best bet would be the angel flame. Good luck.

I've had a pair for a 2-3 years, and have never seen any issue at all. My flameback and Potter's also behave perfectly, and my Regal leaves everything alone except for Zoas that cost $10/polyp and up. Those he goes for with gusto.

I've had a coral beauty and flame angel in my 210 for the the past year in a mixed reef with mainly sps and lps. I had the coral beauty in my 125 for 2 years before I setup my 210. In my experience it varies from fish to fish but I've been lucky so far.

Mine seems to have more fish nipping than coral nipping, keep it well fed and give it some nori to chew on
