Flame Angel

Hi Guys
Just would like to get some of your opinions on flame angels.
Are they reef safe, I hear it's 50/50 depends on the fish.
I have a bunch of hammer coral, frog spawn, toad stool and some random mushrooms. I would like to introduce a flame Angel to my 90 reef but can I ?

Thanks

Flame angel is a toss up. If it doesn't figure out how much fun it is to munch on your hammer from the time you go to sleep until you wake up then it will do great. Once it learns a bad habit it starts to learn others. Kind of like a gate way drug. Just keep in mind that this is a wild animal that you're bringing in. When it nips at one of your kids then you know it's time to put it down.

Flame Angels are considered reef safe WITH CAUTION. Some have had better luck with them than others. I personally went with the Coral Beauty, which is supposedly a bit better than the Flame is terms of being in a reef setting. But....the Coral beauty is still labeled reef safe with caution.

I tried a Flame Angel in a reef tank and all was good for the first 3 months. She hadn't touched any of the corals already in the tank. When I tried to add a new type of Zoa (since she wasn't touching the ones already in the tank) she went right after the new corals like it was dinner. The next day the stone was clean of Zoas and she soon started eating the others in the tank. Maybe if I didn't add any new corals she my not of acquired a taste for them. When she started attacking the clams I had to find her a new home.

I've had two over the years.

1st one: had for a few years, he would annihilate xenia, green zoas or poccliapora. Everything else was safe, including frogspawn, hammer, leather, sps, etc.

2nd one: currently have had for a few years now and hasn't bothered any corals.

Unfortunately, it's never a sure thing with any angelfish.

IMO, I think the Atlantic Blue Pygmy Angel, Flameback, and the Brazilian dwarf angels are about the best bet for Dwarf Angels being reef -safe. Flame can be 50/50 as mentioned above.

If you want one, get one. You aren't buying a house or getting married.

If it nips, remove him. Sometimes I think we overthink things in this hobby.

I have kept several different Dwarf Angels over the years( currently have a Bicolor and a Keyhole in my 120) and my experience is as follows: Dwarf Angels are a 50/50 risk when kept in reef tanks period regardless of kind. They absolutely thrive in FOWLR tanks though because there is no risk of them going after corals. The Flame Angel I once had didn't touch my corals and eventually gave him to friend for his tank and over a period of months he decimated everything the guy had in his tank. My current Angels that I have are model citizens despite the bad press they get from others however. As so many others in this forum have stated time and again they do like corals and it's only a matter of time before they test the waters. It really gets down to how much you are willing to risk to have one in your system. They are attractive fish and if I were you I would get one but beware and have a plan b. One final thought though. As I stated earlier I have kept several kinds over the years and I am convinced that it is the location from where the fish is collected from as to whether or not they will eat your corals. If your hammer or frogspawn or whatever other type coral you have is found in the location from where your fish was taken from( of course there is a 1 in bazillion chance we as hobbyist would know this exactly) then he will already know it as a food source and will certainly eat it. Sorry for writing a book and good luck!
