Tried to get some diving in while visiting friends in Orlando and the shore diving was terrible...just as we were warned by fellow members.
We first went to Rainbow springs for some snorkeling and a scuba dive...that was pretty nice...with the vis at about 80 ft. but I was hoping for a bit deeper water. Swam with an alligator...that was neet.
My friend wanted to go to the Keys for a few dives but another 7 hour drive and hundreds more in cash put a stop to that...so he decided to go to Vero Beach for a shore dive. We stopped at the local dive shop and got some info in the site, and they told us the artificial reef was 100 yds. straight out from the parking area and the visibility was 10 ft.
Just one look at the surf and I could see the visibility was about one ft. and finding the wreck was going to be impossible. I held my hand 10 inches in front of my face and I could barely see it and he still insisted on going down to the bottom. My face was 3 inches from the bottom and I couldn't see the sand and he still insisted on looking for the wreck...so I said screw you and went to shore. There was no way I was going to dive in those conditions!!! A tangle of fishing line could end your dive in a hurry.
Later as the tide went out we saw the mast of the ship sticking out...and it was 200 yards to the right and 700 yards from the shore! Pretty bad advice from the dive shop...
