Florida Keys snorkeling locations

I've never spent any time in the panhandle of Florida so I can't help much. If anybody else has any ideas for BruceWayne, please jump in here and offer up some help.

I was at a meeting where a couple of scientists were doing a presentation about surveys done in Saint Joseph Bay where there is an aquatic preserve. I know that's 100 miles away from Destin, but then I drive 300 miles to snorkel in the Florida Keys.

I would think that with all the barrier islands and back bays that there should be some worthwhile snorkeling in the area.

I'm sorry to see this thread has gone dormant. I'm still around to answer questions here. But I do all my new stuff at another website now. One guess which one. BTW I use the same screen name there as I use here.

I find most of my zoas on the Gulf Side and our place is on BPK, so you know the general area. The zoas are everywhere in the 3-10' areas where you would find lobster. Problem is that you generally have to get your face 1-3' off the structure and carefully scan for them. Also, they seem to like the walls or sides of large structure, slopes, etc. Not many of them are flat on the Gulf floor. Greens, tans are most common. Maroon and blues are harder to locate. The areas with lots of growth like algae are best for zoas and the areas more sparce of the same are better for rock anenomes.

Patch reefs on the Atlantic side hold the Ricordia like in my avatar picture. They also have the bubble mushroom anenomes and zoas.
where have you been able to find ricordea? i know this is an old thread but ive been digging through here and have questions.
