I agree. Used to use had a problem with nitrates. Remove the floss no more problems with nitrates. Now I use Filter socks for 24 hrs once a week plus charcoal once every two weeks.
I use a filter sock 24 x 7. It catches the crud and helps to prevent bubbles coming from my drain pipe. I swap it for a clean one about every 5 days. I only have 3 small fish in my 58G reef so the bio load is very small.
I think it's fine to use filter floss but replacing it twice a month might be a bit too long apart. As mentioned the waste can break down creating nitrates. You might want to rinse it out in ro/di after the first week
Do you realize the "batting" sold in craft stores can be used as floss. It's a lot cheaper and you're more likely to replace it more often.
