Flow - can you have too much?

So in my tank upgrade I acquired 4 older MP40w pumps. Man these things push so much water. I replaced my 2 Jebeo 25 pumps, with 2 of the MP40s yesterday and had to turn them down to like 30%. The water was moving so much!

Is this the kind of flow I'm going to need when I start to acquire SPS?

I may need to glue my rocks together.

I can't see ever needing 4 in a 105g tank but don't want to sell the other 2 yet....

MP40s make more wider waterflow rather wp25. And you can see now the difference or the spot and wide flow.
I have 2 MP40 in my 90G tank plus one Jebao rw15 in wave box mode. The water movement is very nice now for SPSS and lpss.

Try to use one wp25 as wave box mode and MP40s in reef crest mode.

I never use MP40, so can't answer directly.
However, it does exist too much flow especial if a focus, narrow flow to one particular coral 24x7x365 when never change flow pattern. I would suggest you at least set day and night modes to avoid too strong or too weak concern.

BTW, if you are not bare bottom, IMHO, it is hard to have overall too much flow but you are not aware ;-)

I've had this same question....I think it doesn't matter as long as there is a variation of flow...I see some tanks with high direct flow and their sps qrowth becomes really weird...and also what about the fish? Will they be able to handle all the flow?

I was kind of thinking the same thing about the fish, but I can tell you my tang is unphased.... the wrasse and clown kind of avoid it.

"Too much flow" to somebody new (me a few months ago) is usually not enough. Like everybody said, you don't want direct flow but lots chaotic flow. My millipora polyps are whipping around and they LOVE it! Also, I've talk to several people and you want your LPS to sway a little bit, not sit still

4 is enough for your tank, I think the problem will be more on placements and aesthetics. The good thing is that if you run all 4, none of them will be going pass 60%. You will also be able to program all of them to run different modes to create more random flow.

This is what I call good flow and it doesn't have to be constant. It should be like this more than half the time. I find reefcrest mode on the mp40s are best at doing this when they randomly ramp up.

This one is a bit blurry, but you can see all the acros and even lps are getting flow.

In my new build, I have two MP40s running at about 70% and two tunze 6095s running full blast. The MP40's have created a really cool gyre but if I run them at 100% it looks like I just flushed the toilet.

Set 2 on reef crest mode today (1 master the other slave) and turned them up to about 40%. Man the water is really moving. I had to move some of the few corals I have.

What do you use to attach your frags to your rocks? epoxy? super glue?

Just super glue. Some people use putty but I've been only having small pieces so I didn't need it
