Flow/Filtration Help

Okay, so I have a medium-sized reef and a 12G Aquapod already, so I know about flow, but setting up flow in the reef and 12G was pretty painless...

Now, I have a 30-35G tall, hexagon tank that I am establishing as a new home for Trident and Atlantis, my beloved seahorses.

(I'm not sure of how many gallons it is because we got it free from a friend and he wasn't sure, either! We'll find out when we water-test it.)

Because it's so tall, how in the world am I going to make sure there's enough flow to keep everything suspended and going towards the overflow/skimmer, but low enough flow for the horses? We have a Highfin Banded Goby, but he isn't really concerned with sifting sand (spoiled little bugger), and I don't know if the snails will manage to eat all of the detritus on the sand, so it will need to be "stirred" by some kind of flow.

We're doing this tank basically from scratch, as we're replacing all of the silicone and partitioning the back section of the tank with black acrylic to make a filtration area and a chamber to keep the pump, so there won't be any drilling going on...

Also, as far as our filtration area goes, we've heard differing opinions on needing a skimmer. One friend told us that in the first chamber we should just have LR rubble on the bottom and filter floss on the top, and in the second chamber, where the pump is, have a bag of Purigen or ChemiPure to take away any nitrites, ammonia and nitrates there may be in the water, before it's taken back into the tank by the pump.

How does that sound?

I'm really sorry that this post is all over the place... I'm just feeling a little overwhelmed, as this is the first real tank we've "built." I hope it all makes sense!

Any and all help is greatly appreciated!
