I think over 50 x turnover is good for total flow. As long the flow not direct and it is alternating. I have around 62x turnover but the mp 40 is set on random reef crest and my tunze oscillates from full power to minimum.

4 Koralia Evo 1050 = 42 times turnover per hour
2 Koralia Evo 1400 = 28 times turnover per hour
Reeflo Snapper 18 = 10 times turnover per hour

80 times per hour in a 100 gallon tank. With a low turnover rate your corals may grow at a slower rate or turn brown and die.

Good Luck!

I must say I'm surprised, I keep mine over 50 but I thought I was in the minority. I have not had random flow, but I just put my first mp40 on and I like it so much I was thinking of adding another. A second one would put my flow at about 75 times turnover....hmmmm

If its an SPS only tank, I'd say go for it!!!

Keep in mind that random flow is way way way more important than turnover rate in a reef tank. This is why wavemakers and vortech pumps are so popular these days. In fact my reef club recently had a long time hobbyist Dana Riddle speak at our meeting and his testing concluded that random flow trumped pure turnover rate. These tests were done using vortechs on both constant speed mode and other modes such as reef crest. Just something to think about...

Is there a link you can provide? I would love to read Dana's write up. I'm a big fan of Dana! :)

My system ranges from 63X to 105X turnover. Mostly SPS as well.

Do you have any issue with lps or the likes?...my tank is 75% sps, with ultra bright lps(brain, doughnut coral, lobo) on the bottom...I just calculated after the powerhead switch I max at 65x and would like to replace on of the koralia's with another mp40

I'm guessing I have about 2600-3000 GPH flow in my 65. I have moded 6025s which waaay out perform my old HK 750s. So that's about 40-45 per hour or so.. I can use another power head I believe I'd like to be in the 75 range.
