Flow into Sump

I have a drilled tank with sump and refug under the tank. I have a pool pump pumping the water back to tank. The problem I have is - I have to cut the flow on this pump way down or the one drain hole from the tank can not keep up. I changed to the biggest PVC I could use with the holes that are cut. Should I add a overflow box to increase flow to the sump or is it okay. The tank has plenty of flow inside with the Koralia magnum's. I just feel like I am not having the volume of water I would like going thru the sump and getting subjected to the skimmer etc.

What size tank? Sump? What size drain line/bulkhead do you have running from the tank to the sump? Is there a overflow box, or is the bulkhead right at the water line skimming?

Typically you don't need a ton of flow going through the sump.... a good starting place is 5-7X the tank volume per hour, so if you have a 30 gallon tank, you would like to aim for 350-210gph circulating through the sump for starters.

2" Drain should give you AMPLE flow to your sump... (so long as the bulkhead in the tank is 2" as well) for a 120 gallon (which is what I have) you should be looking at roughly 600-850gph flowing through your sump, which isn't really that much.

What type of pool pump are you using? is your hole through your tank for the drainline at the waterlevel, or through the bottom of the tank?

The hole is in the bottom - but I have the PVC pipe coming up to the waterlevel. I find if I leave it at the bottom with no pipe or little pipe it is too nosy going thru the slits in the bulkhead cover then splashing down. I am not sure the pump I will have to look. I have a return line that splits with 2 of those black flex pipe taking the water into the tank. Water just kind of flows out no real pressure.
