Flow question?

Since i am getting a selection of sps frags from pwhitby, i want to upgrade my flow. I have 1 seio M620 now. I am also using a mag 7 unrestricted for a return pump. I was thinking of getting another seio M620 to increase the flow. Is this going to be enough flow, or maybe too much for a 30 long?

That's all ready 43x turnover for that little tank. I would use the $30 for another SPS rather than a another 620.

You could do it, but I would wait. I would actually get them in the tank and used to it before adding more flow. Who knows, you might find that they like your tank the way it is.

it depends Gerald,

as a rule of thumb, 10X turnover of the tank water is good.

I have 30x, but still would like more since my tank is pretty large.

OK what is the formula for flow rate on a tank?

There really isn't each individual animal comes from a different part of the ocean which has different flow and light needs. There are some animals that are used to calm, nutrient rich, high light shallow lagoons and there are animals that are used to deep, strong currents and yet others that live right where waves break on the reef. It's difficult to find a perfect medium. It also depends on what type of flow you have. Is it direct from a pump or powerhead? Or is it diffused like from a stream style pump or is it bouncing off of something?

Like Paul said, at least 10x turnover rate is a great start. This helps keep a good gas mixture in the tank without blowing everything around. I normally have almost 45x turnover rate (not including head pressure from the return pump) in my 29g with a Mag7 Return and two MaxiJet 1200's that push 295 gph each. Right now, I only have one MJ1200 in there, but I'm about to put the other one back in. When and if the MJ Mods are successful, I'll take out one powerhead and mod the other into a stream for a grand total of 93x Turnover (700 from Mag 7 and ~2000 from MJ Mod)

I guess i will order the other m620 and see. At worst, i will have a backup incase one goes out.

I am getting ready to build a bigger cement tank anyway, so one way or another i'm sure i will use it. My new tank is going to be around 110gallons. I haven't decided on the hieght yet, but this 30 gallon is getting to be a pain to arrange things in.

Man,

I calculated my clown tank and it has 13.75 turnover.

Also last night I watched my anomone pull mysis shrimp off the sponge filter and eat them.
