Flow question

Guys,

I have a 60 gal corner tank that I am in the process of stocking with soft corals. I am not thrilled with the flow I have right now. I have a rio 1700 for my return pump and 1 maxijet 1200 with a hydor flo attatched to it.

Im thinking bout getting two koralia 1's and getting rid of the maxi jet. I would have the Rio 1700 return pump which has 642 gph. The koralia 1 has 400 gph. That would bring me to around 1400 gph. What do you guys think.... Have two koralia 1's and pointed in different directions or have one koralia 2 or 3. I am only planing on soft corals.

Thanks

Well if you are going to get a Koralia get a larger one. You can also get a sureflow ecomod for the MJ1200. But don't overshoot if you are stocking softies.

I would go with 2 Koralia 2's. I have a 90 with afew softies in it and run two 3's with about 800 gal coming from my return.

the prefered range for your tank would be:

1200 to 2400 gph

I would go with k2's or k3's given you 1842 gph or 2442 gph in total

I don't think it is possible to have too much flow unless high velocity flow is directly pointed at something.

I run 4 Koralia 4's and ~1000gph return on a 90 gal. That is approaching 6000 gph in the tank. All of my softies sway from side to side and love it.

The high flow reduces dead spots and keeps food and detritus from settling by keeping it suspended in the water column for my skimmer to remove.

You need to your return pump has 3-4 feet of head pressure which knocks that flow down in the 350 to 400 gph range.
I'd go with with a couple of the K 3's.
Soft corals do like good flow.

I have 1300+ GPH in my 40g mixed reef if that helps any. You will notice a huge difference between the type of flow going from maxi-jets to koralias. You can have exponentially more flow with prop style powerheads vs a standard maxi. :)
