Flow rate conundrum

You should have heard the scream when the water jetted straight out of the tank headed for the living room windows. I'm in the basement adjusting the sump, and I knew something was amiss. Gate valve was the answer.

Thanks SFish. Yeah, pretty well how I'm setting it up. As for physical size of the pump, Just want more room in my return compartment. Personal choice. I'm claustrophobic. I'll shop around for a smaller and hopefully quieter pump in the 1600 GPH range and dial down with valve if necessary. Also as a different option, looking at waveline DC return pump but not sold yet on reliability of DC pumps

This is still way too much pump, same thing applies as far as wasted energy and excess heat transfer not to mention trying to push that much water through the sump will likely cause some micro bubble issues.

That return pump is way..way too big..
Rule of thumb is 3-5x display tank volume per hour after losses (head/friction,etc..)..
So you need 180-300 GPH after losses..
You are at least 4-5 times what you need or more.

Will it work.. Sure.. Is it way more than needed.. absolutely.. will it cause a problem.. Probably not..

Solid advice here, I would look for something in the 500-600 GPH range, after typical headloss you should be very close.

Check out the Vectra it's DC and you don't need a valve you can just turn the pump down.

Damn! This pump I originally mentioned in this post ain't working. Motor doesn't run. I set up simple experiment to see how loud pump is with water flowing through my sump. Ran originally. Unplugged it to rearrange a few things. Then it wouldn't run. It gets power as I tried other stuff in the outlet. My friend says I should take it out and gently hit it on protected surface to get it running. seriously!!!???? It's 2016!! Couple of years back I had a super cheap $30 rio pump and had to do same thing. Tell me I am dreaming. Pinch me. This is insane if true

Never heard that before. Mag pumps are junk though. That's why I would rather spend more on equipment. That's just a personal opinion though.
