In my 55 gallon reef I currently have a surge 3500 return pump (@ 660 GPH w/3 ft. head) and a maxi jet 1200 (295 gph) with a hydor flo attachment. Now that I am getting more into sps I would like to add more flow. Should I go with a seio 820 (820 gph), or should I add 2 more maxi jet 1200s and put all 3 on a natural wave, wave maker? Either way I will be keeping the maxi jet and no and cannot afford a tunze. Thanks in advance.
 
I am not much of a diy person to be honest. Cutting up my canopy to accomidate my lights was hard enough. I was ready to buy the seio but then I read a thread on everyone saying how unreliable the rio's can be.
 
I have 2 620's in my 55g. I think the only thing that could make me happier with them is when I get that controller that Shawn posted;)

Awesome pump at a great price. I havent had one bad experience; and you shouldnt either provided you clean them at least every 6 months or so.

Justin, how do you clean them as I've heard people say that the impeller is too brittle to take out and clean and that it easily gets calcum build up in a reef.

I have 3 Seio 620's and 2 Maxijets in my 72 gallon. I clean them every 2-3 months in a very diluted muratic acid solution. I have always cleaned all my powerheads this way. I never take them apart. I'm happy with my Seios. So far I haven't had any problems.
 
If you have problem starting with the SEIOs, just open the cap (the piece in the front) a little bit. That worked for me when I had the 1100 model.
 
I have 1 M1100 in my 55 along with a maxijet 600 "tunze mod" and I think I could go with more flow. Only problem ive had with the seio is not restarting sometimes when shut off. Its really easy to restart tho, I just shuve my pinky finger in the output and give the impeller a jump start and it fires right up. But the thing is so ugly and huge. I like the modded maxi a lot better, it doest put out as much flow but a nice wide disperse flow.
If your getting into SPS then I would go with 2 seios M1100 or larger. There great pumps, just enormous IMO.

you could get a bucket, put vinegar and water into it, and run the pump like that for a few hours. that'd clean it pretty good =) then run it under RO water for awhile to clean out all the vinegar.
 
Pico: Koden does it exactly how I do, although I go a bit further, after I run the pump for a day in a water/vinegar sollution I then break the pump down(and no, I havent noticed it being brittle, but it is hard to get the perpeller out,and I am very carefull), and clean all the components then rinse with distilled, and once its put together again I then run it in some more distilled, then slap her back in :)

I haven't had any problems getting my sieo 620 to restart. I think this may be a problem that they have fixed. As far as cleaning I haven't cleaned mine yet, but I will be this weekend. For all the rest of my PH's I typically just scrub them down with an old toothbrush and scrape the cloraline off.
 
I have two 820 seio, a 600 via aqua, and a 300 via aqua, with the 900 via retun. I found with more or the smaller ones, I can controll where and how much the flow is concentrated. Since I have a mixed tank. Most are pointed towards the left where my SPS is, the end result, the clam, anenome, xenia, and torch don't get as much, but just enough to not cause any algae or detirus lying around.
 
Ok I am ready to buy a seio. I will have about 800gph of flow from the right side of the tank flowing to the left side of the tank. Is it of if the flow rate coming from the left is greater than the flow coming from the right?
