Flower Pot corals

I would like to hear some of the experiences people have had with (Goniopora)flower pot corals here on RC. What I would really like to hear are some success stories. I went to my LFS and they have an awesome yellow flower pot that I would love to give a try at harboring.

I could give you some success stories, but would rather inform you that the awesome yellow Goniopora that you would love to give a try at sounds like a bleached Goniopora that you would want to stay away from. ......or possibly even a yellow dyed Goniopora, which is worse :(.

Also, a 24g nano-cube is too small to keep the common larger polyped Goniopora species. 55g at the minimum.

I have a 90 and my flower pot coral only lasted 2 weeks. Brown jelly disease. I was disappointed. I didn't do the research necessary otherwise I would never have bought it.

I have 2 plate corals and 3 frogspawn that do well along with some mushrooms etc. My tank has been up for 188 days now but I was not prepared for this coral. I have a sneaking suspicien it was sick before I got it.

My sturggle right now is with some brown algae on the rocks that is short and tougher than heck to scrape off. I wish I had a solution for this.

I hope you don't get the flower pot. John has it right on the money.

Regards,

Pat

I had one for 2 years, even budded and dropped babies. What killed it was my clowns hosting it.

I now have another one, I got it from a fellow reefer. I target feed it, and it's thriving, however I will never purchase one. I just want to rescue it and give it the best life I know how. they are very pretty corals but extremely difficult. Some like dirty water and some like low nutrient water. Just depends on the coral and lighting IMO, is very important with gonio's. They do not like being blasted with direct light.

Leave this species to the professionals. It will not survive. The success of others will not make the coral survive in your tank. In fact its terrible that stores even carry this species.

Much agreed. Know what your getting into first. Its kinda like adopting another kid. If you do want to try, if you look enough you will find a healthy one eventually. I reccomend only trying them once you've done SPS successfuly.

I've been very fortunate to have had my goniopora for over six years and its going strong. Last summer my 60 gallon tank reef crashed and everything was lost except for two corals. A colt and my trooper flowerpot. I was devastated from the total loss of life but even though I thought my goni had perished it somehow survived and was back to its perky self within a few weeks. This inspired me to continue in the hobby and I'm so proud of this coral. This pic is from 6 years ago. I'll provide an updated one tomorrow when the lights are back on. BTW, I don't have any magic potions in keeping this thing alive. I think I was just lucky in getting one that was healthy and one that didn't experience any rough handling in making it to the local fish store.

Im not sayin they cant be kept. All Im sayin is that most people can not keep them and the success of the few that can does not justify an amatuer to buy one when it is likely to die. But congrats to you for keepin it alive and sorry about ur tank crash. And please send an updated pic. It looks beautiful.

Totally understand mrongi1 and pretty much agree with you. I've been lucky given the history of these things and I do not consider myself a professional. I do not recommend these corals for beginners and in my case, my success is an exception. They're difficult to keep but maybe not impossible. Not so sure why mine has thrived despite a tank crash and some additional abuse in getting banged up in the new tank but I am thankful for its ability to bounce back and keep alive. Here are a few new pics.
