Flushing RO/DI membrane

If you are talking about he brief flush before every use, you do not need to dump any product water (there should be no product formed when flushing...only the outside of the membrane needs to be flushed).

If you are talking about flushing the preservative from a brand new membrane, I would let it run product water to the drain for 24 Hrs. We once wiped out an entire raceway by only flushing a new membrane for a 6 hours (that stuff is TOXIC to corals!). The last membrane we changed, i let it run to the drain for 3 straight days just to be overly cautious.

When you get a new membrane, there is a chemical inside the RO membrane that preserves and protects the delicate membrane (I can't remember the name of the chemical). If you run the water from a new membrane into your holding tank, it can wipe out your system. This is why all RO systems tell you to run the product water from a brand new system to the drain for several hours before keeping any water for use. You should also do this anytime you install a new membrane.

Thats what I am talking about the maintence flush before I make water. There seems to be a very small amount coming out of my product line. I was just wondering if that needed to go down the sink. Ill leave it as it is, cause its a PITA to change.

(I would if I have to. Just glad I dont seeing how my product line is 8 feet in the air.)

I typically run my RO at home to a bucket for watering houseplants for the first few minutes (until I see my TDS go down)...but that is really just to save my DI resin. The amount is so little, that it will not ruin the TDS of your product holding container (unless it's VERY small).

If you want to, it would be pretty easy to rig up a 2 valve bypass right before your holding tank (or DI if you are running one)...but it is not a necessity :)

We do not do that for the system at the shop...but the holding tank is 1000g, so it is not an issue for a few ML of higher TDS water to go into a 1000g tank.

Mines ~40gallons.
If I am completely out of water, I make 80gal at a time. 40FW/40SW. Sometimes its only FW though.

Thanks for the replies. Ill just leave it the way I have it.
