On Tuesday May 22, 2007 at 7:15pm at New River Middle School (3100 Riverland Rd., Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33312) the Florida Marine Aquarium Society will me hold our May General Meeting. This months topic will be water testing. We will have the room set up with 8 tables each focussed on a different water parameter. The table will include a test kit and general info about the parameter (Magnesium for example). We will have the normal test kits such as Calcium and Alkalinity, but we will also have some that aren't used as often such as Organics. Please bring a pint of your tank water with you to the meeting so that you can test your own water! If you can not bring tank water will will provide some water to be tested (diffent brands of salt, ocean water, tap water, etc.). Every 10 minutes or so we will rotate tables so everyone can test for all available parameters. We will also have refractometer calibration solution (35ppt) available. Please bring your refractometers if you would like to calibrate them.

As usual we will be holding our monthly frag/livestock auction after the water testing. Please bring any frags you may have to help the club out. The auction is a 50/50 split between the club and the member who brings the coral/livestock.

Next months meeting will be held at the Miami SeaAquarium on Tuesday June 26th.

Hey Chris, Im not a member yet. Can I attend and pay the fee right there and then?

You bet!

The form online has not been updated, the current costs are $20 for individual, $30 for family and $75 for commercial.

The test kits which will be available are:

Alkalinity
Nitrate
Strontium
Iodine
Copper
Silicate
Phosphate
Calcium
Organics

Refractometer calibration solution will be available as well.

What about testing for magnesium. In light of the information on bryopsis versus magnesium level this would be a very informative test.

will there be a boron test kit?
i think salifert makes on as well as an additive... never thought it was needed but could beintresting

anyways. did they really jack the commercial member ship to 75 or was that a typo.. that is crazy and will probobly force alot of us to lie about working at an lfs

75 for commercial.. ! your joking! you must think us lfs workers are rich.

Please tell me you don't honestly think they would charge an LFS worker for a commercial membership.

Seems like it would be more equitable if the commercial membership applied just to the owners, not the people who net fish on the weekend!

For anyone who missed it in the other thread, I am quarantining a Montipora confusa that has monti-eating nudibranches. If I can keep them alive, I'll bring these to the meeting Tuesday for show & tell. That way, everyone can get a firsthand view of what they look like.

Also, a quick suggestion. With so many people sharing test kits on Tuesday, anyone that uses Salifert kits may want to bring an extra test vial (one of each size) and titration syringe. That way, more than one person at your table can run each test at the same time.

I didnt' get Boron because it only did 25 tests. As of right now the BOD voted to raise the commercial fee to $75. If your only job is at a LFS this would include you, but I will bring this up at the next BOD meeting.

I guess I stand corrected.

Tim, Just FYI you do not need to be a member to attend the meetings.
I am not a fan of having the kids working a part time job in a LFS pay a full commercial membership and I am sure we will come up with a fair solution in our next BOD meeting, In the meantime feel free to pm me any suggestions you may have.
