FNG with trust issues

Hey y'all, I have a line on a 60G used aquarium. the following is the description from the owner:

Has glass panel tops instead of plastic hoods, 60 gal capacity. I have been using it as a terrarium but did use it as a marine tank prior. Tank has damage on one corner (chipped not cracked), but holds water fine. Price is really for the light, I understand the damage may weird people out so the tank is basically free. If you want the tank and stand only, that's fine too. 20 dollars for my effort of cleaning it out and helping you put it in your car. (It's really heavy)

Would anyone recommend that I trust and use this as a freshwater setup?

Even a chip affects the structural integrity of the glass. The likely hood of a crack occurring where the chip is, when the glass flexes when filled with water (and it will flex) is just not worth it. I mean, you maybe be saving a few hundred bucks and wind up spending a few thousand on repairs to your home.

Yes. And there is no way I'd sleep through the night with this tank filled with water in my house... This is one scary chip.

Terrarium, reptile cage, that sort of thing, fine. As the base for a new marine aquarium build? Nope.

Remember, that glass box is _not_ going to make up a significant percentage of the total cost of a marine aquarium... much less if it's going to be used as a reef system. I seriously doubt that the glass box makes up as much as 10% of the total cost of setting up a typical reef system. I know it didn't in my case.

The light is a Fluval brand led and looks to be half the length of the tank 2'ish and looks to be a full spectrum. The seller is currently using the tank as a terrarium. I reckon the light alone is worth most if not all of the $60 price tag. it's just not as high on my list of priorities as the tank itself.

Ideally, if I can find a 55-60 with hoods, regular florescent non fancy lights and a stand for $100 then that'll make a happy start for me. [language: family-friendly rule] ---sk8r. This tank is basically to slake my lust for the aquarium hobby until I can get rid of a few teenagers and move to a more permanent home. Then the REAL tank build begins.

+1 You're better off passing on this one. Petco has their $1 per gallon sale going on until the end of the month. You could get a brand new 75g for the same money.

Thanks! It came with two Penguin 350s a nice stand (with a rough paint job) that I plan to refurbish and two big boxes of various parts, filter pads and repair bits for stuff.

It's a freshwater setup for now. I won't be able to do a marine tank till we buy a home and I can make it more of a permanent fixture.
