Thanks again for showing us the way to AWESOME rockwork!

wow this is a pretty sweet thread...im just really worried about leeching from the resins/epoxy. it makes me nervous to think that this stuff might break down in the long run..any thoughts?
Both Great stuff spray foam and Bondo are Inert when fully cured so no worries about it leaching. Bondo Brand Resin doesnt eat the foam i just did a small test piece to get used to working with great stuff!

has any one tried this method with a high density pourable urethane foam. they make one in a 15 lb density that i would think would have less of a tendency to float when thin wall press next to overflows and spread out on the bottom

I am about to start building a 180g similar to this and will start a new thread once on the way.

how did you find out that bondo is inert? will it yellow when exposed to UV? how does bondo do with long term exposure to water? hmm too bad noone has done any long term studies...any help would be awesome!

I called bondo they said that its inert when cured. It starts off a yellowish brownish orangish color to begin with. As far as long term use in water the stuff is used to patch boats!!!

hmm how much does it cost and what specific bondo type did you use? did you use the marine type? where did you get it. wow totally worried about that stuff leaching...sometimes i dont trust the reps. thanks for calling though! do you have any pics of that bondo on your foam?

I used the Fiberglass Resin sold at most Any walmart i plan to use the Bondo Jelly type resin when i do the big work as i said this was just a test piece, ill get a pic as soon as i can and post it. I plan on a long Cure (at least a couple weeks) before i put it in the tank just to be sure but im really not worried it drys almost like Glass which is why i coated it with sand.

dont use the jelly. that is tiger hair like body filler with out the feberglass hairs.
poly resen is not waterproof! when used on boats they but a layer of epoxy paint over it.that is what makes it sealed. if it wher people who built plywood tanks would have used it cuz its cheaper then epoxy res. on another note, poly resen stinks wile cureing and cures fast depending how much hardner u use in it, any where from 2- 10 min. i have had it get so hot cuz i put alot of hardner in it that couldnt keep my hand on it too.
use epoxy resens like MAS. watch some of the videos too, they talk about Aiming Blush which is a waxy buildup on the surface on most other resens that is created from moister in the air and the harners. MAS doesent do that. and you can use slow hardners in epoxy resen unlike poly resen.

Oh didn't know that cause at wal mart (ya i know not a good source of info) the guy said the jelly is Exactly the same as the liquid just in Jell Form.

I`m ready to get the epoxy resin on my foam island now I`m confuse not sure with one I want to use :( were I can buy this epoxy resin local???MAS sound good to me but I think the only way to buy it is online or home depot or walmart sell this epoxy resin to???

Here is my 125 with just foam before and the resin and sand.

Here is the tank after a few days of working with sand and resin.

I did find that after the foam is dryed the resin goes on alot better if you peal the outer skin off the foam. I also mixed sand in with the resin on the last few batches and that made it go on alot easer.

Thanks so much for the idea Tiggsy, and thanks to all the others that have posted with there tanks.

Hella
