Foam stuff for the "rock work" look????

How big is the tank? Why not build it in the tank, cure it with water, make sure it fits then put actual live rock in there. I can't imagine the foam curing would be good for living rock (or the living parts of it)...It might work, might not.

hey woodstockaz,

30 lbs should be able to hold down a fair amount of foam. I would suggest placing some of the large rock pieces on the bottom so that you can get the wall to stand.

I mean, it really depends on how much foam you are using and how big your tank is. If you have a 1000 gallon tank and need enough foam to cover the back, then 30 lbs won't be enough.

Peace,
John H.

Does not look good....hmmmmm...OK.
Anyhow, I just attached about 20 lbs of lace rock to some egg crate with the Good Stuff. This may be the stickyyyeeest substance known to man.
Just a note...make sure to securely SCREW on the spout.

Application was way easier than I thought. It's like the stuff for the right shapes

I'll keep you posted..

Well, looks are subjective, but I think Tanu's tank adresses that...

this is a portion of mine:

It's just 2 months old...it's not great but I don't think it looks terrible though!

Also this same stuff is in the hulls of boats, ask anyone who had a boat for a while and guys who work on boats what happens to this stuff.
Ask people who have swimming pools that have foam floats for over a year or two and had to throw them away cause the foam start to break down.

It gets really nasty & brittle.. I've ripped the sheeting off of a foam core boat that the underdeck had stayed saturated.. The foam was a poor design, and it looked like potting soil in some places where it had broken down.

I have worked on boats before, and floating docks, and I assure you that this is not the same stuff. Granted I have not seen this stuff over time, or even dry yet. I have however, seen the floating foam used on docks turn to cr#@. That stuff is much mre porous and bulky. This stuff is smooth.....
Has anyone seen the tank at the check in of Treasure Island in Vegas? I'm pretty sure they use this type of material as well.

Definetly has to be different stuff, should have stated that.. the stuff in boats seems to have more cells/bubbles in it than this stuff, and not even the same color :)

The foam isn't for everyone, because it takes a good long while for things to mature and for the foam to become populated with critters and coralline. It's definitely worth it I think in the long run.

I just like being able to attach things to the wall. I've got a rbta settled into one of the nooks I made out of foam and the macro-media. It's positioned very well and I doubt it will travel far from its assigned nook.

Peace,
John H.

Wow guys. This is the most amazing new part of reefkeeping ive ever seen. That last tank i think it was delv. That was amazing man. I can wait to see the frags grown out hanging off that cliff. If you guys wanna get real about the ecosystem your making you should put some Montipora caps on the walls and let them encrust it and hang out to catch the light. Ive seen it in hawaii and it is truly amazing. Just imagine a wall of montipora with nooks and crannies all orange and purdy:) heaven is this close to being a tank on earth with this idea.

take a look of my foam rocky background in this posts

you can see that i make use of the foam, egg crate, and 20kg of dead rocks to make a rocky background for a 4*2*2 tank the tank is still cycling as it a new tank

will post a pic when my light is fix on

Wow. Did that stuff expand overnight. More than I thought it would. Now I just gotta paint it.
Who was it that said touse plain old Krylon paint. I'm not sure that is going to hold together underwater. I think I'll brush on a two part epoxy in black. Just wish I could find one that was in smaller than 1 gallon container.

woodstockaz, I was in vegas and saw that tank at Treasure Island. That is a great tank. It was about 5 years ago so I can't recall to much but I remember it being very large and stretching the length of the reception desk.

I would like to see a pic of this stuff covering a stand pipe making it look like a rock.

There is also a pic of a 3200 gallon tank flooting around that is currently for sale and has all the plumbing in the middle covered by some artifical rock. Might be interesting to see what that is made from.

I have found my new foam wall to be indespensable. I am able to glue SPS, zoos, a monti, and various other frags to it and it adds a whole new dimension to the tank. I can't wait for my cap to grow and establish itself on the wall. Rich.

Sunny.
Any problems with the space behind the foam.
Do you have water flow bach there?
How much space is between the back and the foam?
