Foam stuff for the "rock work" look????

I've got a few pics but they are too big to post. When I resize them to 50KB they come out "pixilated"
Any ideas what I need to do to post them?

I didn't read through the whole thing but are we sure that nothing is being leached from this? I know in Europe there was a product very similar to this that was used for years and after a long time it started leaching. Since then there is another product that's been made that doesn't leach anything but it's not available here yet.

I don think anyone KNOWS just yet from what I've gathered. Sounds like we all know this stuff degrades over time. I think most people are being hopeful that their epoxy or cement coatings will protect it.

There are a couple now that actually have done it, i did mine w/ no extra coat. just a whole crapload of aragonite. I can say from 2 mths experience there is no leaching, i have sps in there and everyones(fishes,Inverts, corals) happy as can be. Also have a micron sock on the overflow, no dust degradation under 250W DE MH. IMO its as inert as is your powerhead

2 months isnt a reliable amount of time to say that from though. Give it 3 or 4 years and then we'll have a better idea. The foam under a dock (as some1 said earlier) will dissolve after a few years and it is made of the same stuff you are all using from what i've read. Im not saying there will be problems, just that 2 months isnt yet long enuf to say.

I know im just giving my own experience on the subject. Maybe you would like to look at TANU's tank at what it would like in the long-term. The stuff under docks was discussed im not sure if on this forum in RC or RAG i think. but was found out to be a Latex-based rather than polyurethane closed cell.

Ah yes you are right i forgot that was different stuff. Ah yes i've seen tanu's tank. How long has that been going for? And is it epoxy coated or plain or cemented?
I'm just sort of skeptical because I wouldnt want to recommend this to anybody before there was a lot of proof it was safe long-term.

Ok i picked up a nano i am going for the Rock Wall look in it beacuse it was a good deal. I am going to Go crazy with it All the way out the top and peaks and whatever i can come up with i will post pics!

whew! just got done reading the whole thread.
Good pics everyone!
I've worked with great stuff quite a few times deadening my car.
It is strong when fully dry but...idk...i still worry about the long-term effects when in saltwater.
Great idea about the fiberglass...came up with that idea myself before i saw your post. I thought of making the wall out of fiberglass than using fiberglass or silicone to hold rocks in the wall if i cant get the mold to look as real as i want it. I'm assuming fiberglass is Reef safe?
Fiberglass isn't too bad of a job and i'd rather spend the time to do it right and sleep at night. When i drop some high doller into this hobby, like everyone else, i prefer not to take risks.

Do you know the name of the stuff that is not availible here yet?

hey redeye,

I think he is referring to the stuff that royal-exklusiv uses... supposedly the stuff was designed in house.

Just go to captiveoceans.com and follow the link to royal-exklusiv and you should find it on the website. Make sure to go to their english website. :)

Peace,

If doing a fiberglass mold for the background any ideas how to attach it to the back glass wall w/o ruining the tank (i don't prefer to have it there permently is what im saying). It's goign to be a real expensive tank so i dont want to screw it up.

You could spray the fiberglass on eggcrate and then machine some sort of plastic mount or hanger for the back of your tank. The bottom could be supported by some real rock to prevent it from sliding out. Just an idea....have seen others do this.

I would take a look at some others designs as I have never done this before. A friend of mine did it and one thing he told me is to make sure you are aware of the foam coming out the backside of the eggcrate. Apparently he set the egg crate down to spray it and forgot to pick it up so the foam went through and dried on a piece of scrap wood. When the foam hardens its pretty tough to get off!

I'm not sure if i understand the point of the eggcrate. When the fiberglass is dry the foam will be taken out and the mold will be VERY solid. Good idea on the rock for the bottom to keep it slididng out. THe tank will most likely be eurobraced. Even considering drilling 2 very small holes at the top and using a zip tie or some sort to hold it down. NOt sure, the clips are a good idea but not sure if it could be done if the tank is Eurobraced. Any other thoughts on how to secure it down to the top would be great. thanks. I think sealing it off is pretty important as well to keep detritus from collecting behind the fiberglass backdrop.
