Foam stuff for the "rock work" look????

Well after much reading, I decided to take the plunge and make a backdrop for my new corner 150 gal

This is my effort.....

Almost as soon as I sprayed the foam on the egg crate form I dropped handfulls of coral chunks all over it and then burried it in sand. This really helped brake up the "Turd" look.

I used a rustolium spray paint for plastic (like Krylon Fusion) and misted light layers and sprinkled each layer with sand to give it texture.

Once I have it in my tank I will take some more pics

very good reading. wouldnt it easier ( and maybe safer ) to just drill holes in the base rock and attach it to the eggcrate with black zip ties? that was my plan. am i missing something about zip tieing the rock?

reefer for life....

I definatly agree...and there are alot of threads wher people have actually created a rock wall...
Hoever, doing that can be caustly and is not a DIY(which so many people are so fond of acomplishing :D---myself included)

alien...

i tried looking for threads where people had built there own rock walls using zip ties, but the search feature wasnt working. do you have any links to any of these posts? thanks.

I dont remember any links
but I remember seeing a thread for a "reef wall"
If you search that then youll definatly find somthing

The person who created this mounted frags onto liverock...that they had attached to eggcrate....that they had attached to the back of there tank....:D

i just finished a corner for my 55g. i painted it also. came out good. i used eggcrate as a structure then foamed over it and i'm going to silicone it to the bottom of my tank. fyi, walmart has a kind of foam right next to the greatstuff foam called 'touch n foam'. its in 16oz (4oz bigger than greatstuff and also cheaper!) containers for like 3.50 i believe? great deal and works just like greatstuff.

heres some pics :) sorry for the dirty salty tank walls.. i just drained the sucker

Geez, I just found this the other day!! Looks like some "Great Stuff" but I got the better fish-safe stuff in the POND SECTION at HOME DEPOT. :D

I dont know if that was mentioned, I remember some ppl looking around HD for great stuff, but the pond stuff is better, and has a harder, glossy finish when it cures.

12oz can is $12.99 from what I saw.

Drfostersmith.com has it for 7.99 plus shipping.
So does azponds.com but if you buy 4 or more you save a little bit.

I still want to do this to a tank... one day... I may setup a small nano and do this to the back jsut for fun....

Unfortunately my 36G was taken but as we speak i am building my new 75G cube 24x24x30H with a foam backdrop one again.

For those who asked;
I had it for about a year and a half or so before shutting the 36G down. In that time Ihad no degradation of the foam other than ones afflited by my OCD aquascaping of new corals. I smelled the wall after I emptied it out and it smelled fresh, like cured rock should. I had alot of life in it as well in form of many types of inverts, pods and the like
