Food Hoarding?

Hi all,

Apologies if this has been covered before, I've tried searching for it but couldn't find much info.

My G. Viridis is only about an inch and a half long but seems to be trying to match the world gluttony record. I've been feeding him a small piece of scallop, prawn or whitebait every evening and as soon as I've given him a bit he pokes his head out of his burrow and starts trying to look big and menacing. If more food is offered he grabs it, retreats and then comes back for more.

I'm worried that water quality will deteriorate if I feed too much or if he starts storing part of his meals. Does anyone know whether hoarding like this is usual behviour or will they only take what they can eat?

many thanks,

Ed

I have heard some will bury their food, though the best thing is test your water parameters religiously for a few weeks and see if there is are fluctuations it may take time for buried food to actually effect the water parameters.
Or just feed him less like every other day, it won't starve to death.

That's good to know. I was planning on dropping it back to feeding on alternate days but I thought I'd better fatten the little fellow up a bit first. My problem with regards to testing is that the block of LR he's in suffered a lot of die off of macro algae etc in transport so quite a lot of the nutrients are coming from it. Hopefully it'll settle in a week or two and then I can start to work out how much to feed.

Cheers for the info,

Ed
