For All Mantis Seekers in the NJ Area

For those who're looking for a mantis (I know how irritating it can be), there's currently 2 G. chiragra at Ocean Gallery II, on Route 22 in the Plainfields. Price is somewhat reasonable, $25 each.

They're being kept in a tiny display TOGETHER, so someone please rescue them before they hurt each other!

For those who're looking for O. scyllarus, I usually see them at Hanover Pets (by rt 10) for $60+. They sometimes have other species but their prices are insane.

Goodluck to all the potential mantis keepers, hope this helps!

I was in Hanover Pets on Saturday and saw a 6-7 inch G. chiagra selling for $50. I showed it to my wife and she became very interested. We didn't buy anything since the prices on corals there were really insane. After we were home and started talking about the Mantis, my wife decided she wanted it. So off I went to pick it up along with snagging a 5 1/2 gallon tank, light canopy, and filter. The price was high, but for seeing a Mantis only one other time in a LFS, I though the price was justified, especially for one this size....goosebumps.

I set the tank up with water from my 50 gallon reef tank, put in 1" of SD sand, and some extra rocks. After putting it in the tank, it has been the focal point in my house ever since. We only heard it click one time, but I am constantly on edge about it breaking the glass. Amazing creature.

Yes, Hanover Pets has insane prices for any mantis they have. They also mis-identify the critters at times - I once saw a Gonodactylus sp. identified as a peacock.
