I am looking to buy a new PC for the house here, and wanted some opinions. I just need something reliable and fast. Price is absolutely an object :D I don't want to dish out too much , but like I said I want something I can tool around the "intra-web" on...

Also looking for an extra decent size monitor for my work PC and a set of speakers? Anyone know where there may be a deal to be had?

Check this out...

If everything boots up and if the windows install seems to be corrupt, I can help you out with reformatting and such. Seems to be a good priced PC, but may need some bugs taken out of it. If you wanna new one, check out tiger direct because they have awesome deals on computers and hardware! If you need a regular monitor to do ya for now, I have a CRT sitting in the attic that worked before I upgraded to a bigger CRT.

That is interesting..I work in Elliston , I may check that out...

exscuse my ignorance , but what does CRT stand for? =0)

Its a monitor. Cathode ray tube....means its the older bulky monitors and not the newer flat panel or LCD monitors.

If you run across a computer that needs fixed and is cheap, let me know and I can take a look at it and tell ya if its worth buying. I went to school for programming and now for the repair aspexct so I know a little I guess over the years of crashing and repairing them myself!

I'd go for it if I had the cash...has XP and Office on it and good sound. I'd at least check it out if nothing else and if its doing anything funky, send me a message on here and I'll tell ya if its an easy fix.

I could probably build a computer for around $250-$300 but that wouldn't include the monitor, keyboard, and all of the other necessities. So yeh....$200 is a good deal I thought too. I am upgraded to the 64 bit stuff and my processor runs at the same speed as that. I believe after buying motherboard & cpu combo, memory, and hard drive mine was around $200 if that tells ya anything!

I don't know what you just said , but it sounded cool:D

LOL I just don't know a thing about Computers , except how to surf the web , and even that skill is suspect at best...

:strooper:

Haha...yeh it kinda grows on ya after a while I guess.

Try searching CL if this one doesn't come through because sometimes people are selling them cheap! I found one for free one day because the woman said she was upgrading and said her old one goes to someone lucky for free. Wish I could have caught that one in time...

I ended up picking that one up after work today. The guy lived about 2 minutes from my job. All seems fine externally with it , and I played with it a bit while he had it hooked up... I guess the next step is to erase everything and start from scratch right?

Always a good idea to wipe it out and start from scratch - you don't know where it has been :eek1: :eek1:.

As a matter of fact with Windows machines we just wipe 'em out and reinstall everything every couple of years just to get rid of the "win crud" that accumulates through daily use. Hopefully yo uhave the software CDs available so you can re-install whatever you got with the computer.

Cool! You could just wipe everything out, or just get some good software to get rid of anything on it, uninstall the stuff you don't want, and go from there if you don't have the disks to reinstall the operating system.

I would wipe everything and do a fresh install. There isn't any substitute for a fresh install to remove all the "crud" as Shivaji mentioned. Running cleaning software will only postpone the major problems.

Wiping everything would not be simply deleting the partition, but erasing the hard drive with 3rd party software. from the sounds of it, I'd say Eric isn't too familiar with wiping a hard drive, as well as reformatting it. I could be wrong tho...

If ya aren't Eric, bring it to me and I can do it for ya. This is of course if you have another Windoes installation cd...

Hey guys ... It is great to have this "reef" forum as a resource for all my PC needs... You guys are the best.... My own lil "Geek Squad" ( I say that in the most endeering way!) ...

I haven't hooked it up yet , but I do have a use for the Monitor and Speakers which is what I mainly needed for work .... Now I have time to clean the PC and all that mumbo jumbo ...

Still in search for an extra FlatScreen Monitor and speakers ...

You don't need to wipe it just format the partition and reinstall XP on it. As I said before, this assumes you have all the software that you need available to you. That is normally the downside to buying used computers - the original software CDs and device drivers are nowhere to be found. If you are "geeky" enough, I would say install Linux and it will do fine for anything you need, and it will not cost you anything, but that might be more trouble than you want to go into.

I found that usually just partitioning the drive and reformatting that i still have the same bugs, as viruses and such later on. I always used a 3rd party and erased all data and then reset the partition and formatted with xp again.
