For all you clownfish experts...

I picked this little guy up and am trying to get him to pair with the lady. She hogs the anemones, although he did show some interest in them about a week ago. Now he just swims around with my true perc.

My question is...What kind of hybrid is he? Sorry about the pic quality but I think you can see the white stripe down the middle of him. Everything about him says tomato but he has to be crossed with some other kind of clown.

I am certainly no "expert" but it is not unusual for a tomato complex clown to maintain a midstripe for an extended period of time. In most cases it will fade as the clown reaches maturity. It is not likely to be a "hybrid".

IME: It is also not unusual for a dominant clown to make sure a new comer stays well away from it's home. If you are serious about getting a stable pair, remove other clowns.

Yeah, I planned on moving the perc out. I had another perc that commited suicide so its just been by itself since.

I have never seen this type of marking on any tomato's. If anyone else has had one like this, let me know.

Most juveniles within the tomato complex have additional stripes. Check out some others here:

It is very common for juvenile tomato clowns to have a mid-bar remnant.

At one point they actually have 3 stripes before they start to lose the back two. Some hold on to the stripes longer than others. I have seen a couple tomato clowns that were an inch long that still had all three stripes. It gives them a completely different look.

FWIW: If Scott's not an expert then neither am I. :)

Thats pretty interesting. I will definitely keep watching it. I think he is coming out of his juvi stage so we'll see how it goes.

Thanks traveller

yeah, mid stripe in tomato not that uncommon in young one's. I would think that this pair will eventaully not work out, I've been wrong before though.

good luck

Why would you say they wouldn't work out? You dont know anything about my tank or their behavior. I've only had them a week man.

Whoa! its alright, just my experience. Do what ya like but time will tell.

Relax and good luck

why would ther be a problem with this pairing? I am not aware of any particular difficulty in pairing tomato clowns.

I'm pretty sure he is trying to pair two tomato clowns. The perc in the picture is just a straggler and is going to be removed. He is not trying to pair the perc with the young tomato.

HAH! EZ, I thought you were crazy. So yes, I'm trying to pair the two tomato's. I guess that first pic kinda threw you off. Thanks for all the replies guys. Peace!
