For all you Shrimp/Cyclers

OK, here is the situation - I put 3 raw shrimp in my 120 gal new tank on 1-26-06. The amonnia levels were .50 from putting some flake food in earlier. The shrimp have been in there now for over 40 hours and my amonnia levels are reading at just 1.0. Is this normal - I really figured it would take alot less time to send the amonnia skyrocketing with dead shrimp in there?

No live rock yet!!
120 lbs of base rock (Hirocks)
200 lbs of sugar white sand
PH-8.2
Temp - 75.6
SG - 1.024

I'm trying not to put fish in there (but they talking to me in the lfs)

That's probably enough ammonia, or more than enough, actually, even for Hirocks, so I'd just pull the shrimp.
