I have the EV 120 in my 90 BB (about 130 total gallons) powered by the Rio 2500. I'm just curious to find out what pumps you guys have powering this thing. I've been using the Rio for about 10 months and all I get is brown water. Some people are pulling out brown shaving cream. Feedback?

Pump recommendation from users have been pretty consistent on pretty much all models. Buy a one pump larger than what AquaC recommends. I think for the EV120 mag5 is recommended so get a mag7. I have a EV180 and i use pumps anywhere in the 900-1000 gph when AquaC recommends something in the 700gph. I originally bought the package with a mag7 and upgraded to a 9.5. The performance increase was tremendous

I use the Mag 5 with my EV-120, and I have to dial it down a little with a valve. Running it full blast raises the water in the skimmer above the recommended level.

I never had any luck with any submersible pumps with my EV-400. Once I switched to an Iwaki pump I got the results I was looking for.

go with the eheim. i have a ev180, in which the rec is a mag 7. got decent skimmate but very inconsistent. after reading the aqua c club thread, i bought a eheim 1262 (for your skimmer 1260). skimmer pulls out alot more nasty skimmate now. during this time, i was in contact with aqua c (steve). though they recommend the mags for their skimmers(i think it may be a cost issue, since the skimmer is kind of expensive), they will admit that the eheims are better for it. the reason is that eheim are pressure rated pumps and this is what is need for the skimmer to make its microbubbles through the injection port. after adding a eheim, instead of using your gate valve, you will use the air injector to adjust water level and skimmate consistency. overall, buying the eheim, at least for me, was the best decision in regards to my skimmer.

I use a mag 7 on my 120. I know many people are using a 1260. I am getting very very dark skimmate and I cannot get it to skim anymore wet. Make sure you clean your injector port often as stuff seems to stick inside

I have an iwaki 70 on my EV400 and it pulls out black coffee type of skimate that smells really yummy. Plus, I have ozone running through it so Im sure that helps.

Try running O3 through it, and bumping up the pump size to a little more manly pump :)
