If Im treating ick with hypo, how slow should I bring down the salinity? I currently have 2 clarkii clowns in my display. No hermits, snails anything only fish, so im doing in my main tank.

freshwater dips has worked wonders for me, i just put the ick infected fish in a 5 gallon plastic tub or something that will cover him/her entirely and put the fish in for about 5 minutes or so and all the ick falls right off, then grab him and put him in the display the ick will go away, repeat as necessary every few days if it persists hope this helps...

Removing the Ich from the fish only kills the adult trophont stage. Ich's lifecycle includes stages that live in the sand bed and in the water.

you cannot only treat a fish for ich, you have to treat the fish and its tank.

You can either remove all fish and treat in a quarantine tank letting the display tank run fallow for 4-6 weeks, or you can treat the display tank, (copper or hypo). Obviously either technique will kill inverts and corals.

If you only take the Ich off of the fish, it will come back in a few weeks or months.

Fish can develop an immunity, so repeated dips over a prolonged period may help a fish to cope with the nuissance, but the ich will still be present, waiting to prey on any fish whose system can't handle the infestation.

As far as how slowly to lower specific gravity, my clowns have tolerated a drop from 1.026 to 1.009 in less than 4 hours. For a hearty fish like a clown, I wouldn't worry about it.

Other more delicate fish may require a slower reduction in sg.

ok cool. Ill be starting hypo in 2 days just to see how he does between now and then first. I dont mind treating my entire display tank for the fact I have nothing but those 2 clowns. So I figured Id kill 2 birds with one stone.

I treat 4-6 weeks in hypo. This does NOT count the time to bring the salinity down or up. I usually give it two days to bring the salinity down and at least seven to bring it back up. Selcon is a good idea, as it will assist in making the fish healthy. I soak all food in it for a few minutes before feeding.

I'm in the middle of hypo right now. We brought it down over 72 hours.

and we'll do the same for bringin it back up too.
