Hey Shawna,

Just curious.
Has he always done this?

Who was first in tank, hippo or clam. Or together..?

I have a Crocea & a Maxima. All my Tangs leave them alone.
(Yellow, sailfin, & hippo)

However, once my sailfin was picking at the maxima like months ago.
It never seemed to hurt it. But as my attention was drawn to it, I noticed the clam had some sort of pest. Like these flat "bugs".
I got rid of them and checked him for days until they were gone for sure.

Mysteriously afterward, the sailfin had no interest in picking at the maxima anymore. I don't know if it was connected to the pests or not.
But the tang had no interest in bothering the clam ever before or after.

I suppose you just have an individual with bad behavior. Interesting, because I have never seen that before. But I'm sure it's possible.

My Tangs are so good with everything in the tank. I wonder where/how yours picked up on this bad behavior? Interesting at best...

How is the clam doing? Is it getting bothered? or NO?

Well the hippos have been in the tank for long time, then came the clam.
As soon as I put the clam in the hippos had interest in him. They kept testing it ,the clam would slam shut.I did a search and found this is common with tangs and as per advice (I moved the clam up higher in the tank) and was told the clam may kill the hippos by slamming shut on their head. Still they kept nipping it the clam, The clam starting receding its mantle and I had to put a clear piece of acrylic over it (drilled bunch of holes and set it over the top. For the sides I used fishing line criss crossed XXXXXXX as to block then from getting in.
Did this for a week, Hippos were not bothering him so I Took it off.
In the Morning I got up looked at the clam and it was missing it's syphon? think that's what it was called, and it was down hill from then on.
Clam died :(

Then after the clam died they started messing with my open brain the same way nipping at it! Now this brain has been in the tank for a long long time and they never had shown interest it until we got the clam! I don't know if they get a taste for coral or what but it was odd! Anyhow instead of giving them a chance to kill my open brain (one of my favorite corals) I traded it to Kat! (thanks Kat)

So with that said I have some other various corals in the tank that they do not bother (I'm not sure) what happened but I did check the clam and no pests at all! It was extremely healthy/pest free :)
