fixture is 12 inches with legs it looks like about 14 inches wide.

I should have asked this in the first place, but is it suitable for some viewing light when my MH is off? Could I mount it to the canopy?

it is not really a night viewing type of fixture. more used as a sump light or a light over a pico/nano tank.
