For those with smaller tanks and sumps..

What size sump do you use? I'm thinking about using a 10g sump for my 20g display. I'll have the inflow of water go to the fuge area, then over and under three baffles, to a smaller section where the mag 5 will return the water back.

Also, could I take the HOB remora skimmer out of the display and attach it to the sump?

Could you post a design pic?

I started with a 10 gallon nano!

I have a 29 gallon with a 10 gallon sump. I put my remora HOB in there and it works fine. I have a few pictures of my design. I hade quite a bit of help from a few different forums building this one.

Your design sounds like it would work, but I would recommend the crash chamber with the water directed into a skimmer area. That way you dont have the water stirring up your refuge and the skimmer will be taking water directly from your overflow.

Good Luck!

If you were to use Sterilite totes like shown below, you could easily plumb them together with a union that way you wouldnââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t even need baffles. This is cheap, easy and you can even hang your skimmer on the one on the left since the water level would be stable.

I forgot to mention that I would use a crash chamber, but are you suggesting I partition off a smaller area and dedicate it just to the skimmer as in your design? Does that work well for you?

The left tote could be for your skimmer and the feed from your overflow could dump there as well. The water level in the right tote will be the only location that will be affected by evaporation so it will drop.

You could do anything with totes. I've seen people use 1 tote for their skimmer also where the overflow dumps, 1 for a fuge and 1 for evaporation/water top-off.
