I am setting up a new devoted tank for broodstock clowns I intend it to be fish only. when its up and running I will keep the sg low at first and was thinging of adding some formalin the the water as a theraputic dosage. after time will carbon remove it and what other implications are there?

thanks for any input.

I would not add formalin to anything that did not need it. Lots of impacts to the water quality, biologicals, fish, etc.

Mild doses of medications are not proven to add any value, but may be detrimental.

thanks

so would a dip suffice for new fish
the product i have is called reef life yellow treatment and contains formalin, dimethylanaline and antiseptic.

the broodstock tank will act as the quarentine as well as they will be the only fish ever in the tank (29 gallon)

1. I would not use Formalin in the main tank if there is no severe brook investation. Even then, I'd rather use the med in a bath. I prefer to use only Formalin, without any additioal meds mixed with it.

Here is some info

2. I routinely give my WC clowns Formalin bath at introduction (1 ml per 5G) as a precaution.

3. I would still set up a 10G QT for the clowns and introduce them to the main system after 4-6 weeks of obseravation and treatment (at least for internal parasites). If your clowns come down with a problem in your main tank, you might end up tearing it down/administering copper, etc. QT will save you a lot of trouble in the long run.

Do you just do a single bath at introduction (in the absence of symptoms) or do you do the multiple baths over multiple days at suggested by this and other articles? Obviously in a symptomatic fish the full range of baths is in order. But as a precautionary measure is it desireable to administer more than the introductary bath?

so..
I know this sounds risky but
the dose of the treatment I have is 5 ml per 10 gallons once a day for 1 week for a week changing 25 to 50% of the water prior to each daily treatment.

according to the formalin guide lines posted by marina p a theraputic dose of formailn is 25mg per litre which can be used in qt. Assuming (and I know its a big assumption) that the product I have is about 25mg/l of formalin if i want to dip for 45 mins I should increase the concentration of the dose of the product I have 10 fold to attain a formalin dose of 250 mg/l

if I increased the dose by less would it still be effective as a short term dip.

and what amount of formalin would be a lethal dose for an average sized clown i wonder.

I did it slowly inreased the dosage to 10 fold in 1 hour dip time
fish were fine watched several parasites come off the skin.
the fish are eating well and gill movements are around 60 per min.

thanks.
