forums for website - need input

I had originally wanted to add a forum to our website to use IN ADDITION to the one here at RC.
Here are the reasons I thought it would be a good idea:

1) our sponsors could post whatever they want in the way of updated stock arrivals, specials for the club, etc..

2) We would not have any rules to live by. RC has to appease their sponsors and have a set of rules for the sake of order and being a public forum, all understandable. we could use our forum for listing stuff for sale whether it be fish related or not, etc..

3) also it would be a better place to talk about basic business that would be a little more private than this forum.

As I said I thought it was a good idea, BUT like most things some people are concerned about it not being a good idea and have sent me messages to that effect (affect?). I want people to post here what they think about those forums and I will take the majority vote and do whatever that works out to be.
Thanks

although my vote wont count(since I am not a member of the club) I think that rc is kinda restrictive. I had some stuff for sale that I had to practicaly give away because I can not post anything here without it getting removed!

correction -- I am not a member of the club yet! hope to remedy that soon... also thinking of joining the beech lake club in Lexington. Or rather in addition too!

I think a club forum would be great, But only so long as it would require a member password to access and post, that it should be "restricted at least to post for members only"!!
and even then I feel there would need to be some rules within reason.

If that is not possible then I think RC is all we would need,
But that is just my opinion,

What He said!

No Tickee,
No Washee.

Yes it was my intention to make it a members only forum with username and password access.
I neglected to mention that originally.

I am definitely on board with this.

We had a club forum on the website about 2 years ago. Only 3 people ever signed up to use it, and no one ever posted any threads. Most people said it was too much to keep up with...posting on the club forum on our website, and keeping up with threads on our forum on RC. We took the forum down after about 6 months of no use.
Maybe there is more interest this time. I guess we'll see.

The RC forum will get you exposure, the private one will not and I think you'll find that over time one will become fairly inactive as Richard has mentioned. I think having the private one for club business only and maybe a classified section would be enough. As one of the sub-forums you could have an officers only forum which would not even be viewable by the general membership. I think having a section for or allowing businesses to "pimp" their wares would be a tricky / delicate undertaking and someone is bound to get upset with that at some point so I think that is an area the club would do best to avoid and put the energy and space into club matters.

Yeah, but if it was private, dzones could continue cussin' and not get yelled at. :p

(Honestly, I for one don't care where we post, although I really do like the exposure and depth of RC.)

My Thoughts: I'm cool either way but... I do feel the addition of private club forums could help facilitate better communication. You could include officer sections for meeting planning and vision etc...

I say a board for things for sale, let the moderaters at rc handle the hard stuff, I helped run a bb once and moderating is a full time job.
