Found a Cure for Hair Algae...

MyMonkey

Persona Non Grata
Well, that's right. It appears as though I have something in my tank that is killing of the Hair Algae finally. However, the killer is Cyanobacteria. Dadgum... It disappears at night when the Nasarius stir it up or eat it (wishful thinking) then grows like mad by the end of the day on the sand. Increased flow to the area. However, I have an open brain down there and it does not like the high flow. Is this algae thing ever ending?

Best thing on the market for cyano is chemi clean. Can put it right in your tank. Won't harm a thing. I've used it on seahorses, softies, inverts etc and never had a complaint. Cyano was gone within 48 hours and never came back. I have never tried it on SPS tho.

How long has this tank been set up? You shouldn't be having a cyano outbreak that will out compete your hair algae if it's been for more than a few months. I know you've probably heard it before, but there have to be too many nutrients in your system to promote the hair algae and cyano. Once you find what that problem is, your algae problems will disappear. My bet is overfeeding, improper lighting or too low of flow.

You can get chemi clean at Aquarium Concepts. Good luck!

Sure it is... when you buy a new tank, get new sand, get new live rock, and start off smarter than you did the first time like I did.

Glad to know AC is still in business. That's where I used to shop, when I lived in the area....
Re chemi-clean and sps and lps, no problem. No effect on inverts. My conch went under the sand and didn't come out for 4 days, (unusual for her) but she came out. I netted out the last of it, and we're fine.

how deep is your sand? If it's shallow, do you vacuum it? I know we've talked about using the turkey baster on your rocks, did that help the cyano there?

Actually I already have the Chemi Clean and will use it. As far as nutrients go. I feed every other day and not that much really. I do use the baster on the rocks. The Cyano only grows on the sand. The bed is about 2 inches and I do vacuum it. Weekly water changes. Dang.
